Is it just me or does the Cayman have a bit of Ferrari 360 going on? I find it interesting that 15 years later there's a Porsche that seems inspired by a Ferrari.

I don't think it's quite as blatant as the Corvette copying the F12. But there is no doubt that the Ferrari 360 was hugely influential on car design in general. Look how many other cars copied the engine-under-glass look after the Ferrari 360 came out, and are still copying it today (cough, Audi R8, cough)

I think the similarities with the new Porsche are not copying now so much as the 360 was just so influential. It's cues became accepted best practices that have permeated car designs all over the place. I am sure the Porsche guys thought that they were emulating classic Porsche lines derived from a 911 and don't know where they ever got the idea for trapezoidal air ducts up front or xenon lights under plexiglass.

I love that Cayman! I guess I can see where you are coming from but remember that the 360 spent 5400 hours in the Ferrari and Pininfarina wind tunnels during its development so it's not a surprise that the general shape would be seen again. Here is a shameless shot of my car!!

From time to time someone will make a car that will look somewhat contemporary a decade or two after it comes out. 360 Modena, E60 5-series and first generation Audi TT always comes to mind. No one who isn't in to cars would know that the 360 Modena is a 16 year old design. Look at the other offerings from that era and almost everything looks dated.

Ps. I don't see the Cayman and 360 connection, but I think the new 918 Spyder looks like a Carrera GT and 360 combination from the front... (don't ask how or why!)

    Nice car btw!

    Interesting point.

It's not that I think the Cayman is a copy but there are certainly similarities in the broad headlights, the curve of the side glass, the haunches etc...

I also find it interesting that 15 years later a 360 and a loaded Cayman S are basically the same price as well...

I agree with you but because to my eyes the 918 looks like a Cayman which looks like a 360 (albeit not as wide, sleek, low).

5400 hours in the wind tunnel and they didn't figure out the mirror design blocked airflow to the vents until when..?

The only thing I can fault on a 360 is the ugly mirrors...

I don't see a likeness between the Cayman and any Ferrari.

I have to agree that I do not see the likeness. With all due respect to Porsche owners, I do not care for their styling even though they are great performing cars. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

Actually, I think they look nice and are as well-placed as they can be for driver vision. But that's the problem, as they cause enough turbulence at very high speeds to limit the air intake to the engine, thus causing the car not to be able to achieve its theoretical top speed. This was corrected with the mirrors on the CS, which IMHO don't look as nice and are not as well placed for day to day driving. But the CS can achieve top speed because its air flow isn't restricted by mirror turbulence.

I think that the 360 and Cayman look nothing alike and also that the F12 and C7 look nothing alike.

Yea...right. The C7 is one of the most blatant Ferrari Rip-Offs I have ever seen.

Agreed, I have both and they really don't look alike at all in the flesh. Sitting next to each other in the garage you can see that the 360 is much lower and wider... the cayman is much more "Porsche" in general design, and very much like the 918 as mentioned here with the stacked headlight design.

I think they're both beautiful and I feel fortunate and lucky to own both. I spend a lot of time staring at them in the garage with a nice glass (or two) of wine. Each has it's own look and while the cayman is a truly gorgeous design... but it really does pale in comparison to the 360, at least in my humble opinion.

The front end ducts on the Cayman do resemble those of a Ferrari 360. So much so, every time I see one in my periphery where I work, I think it's a 360. The angle, width and separation are very much influenced. This is only for the brand new Cayman, not the last generation.

I agree, they did a good redesign of the new Cayman. Almost makes me want to get one as an garage companion for my F car, but there are so many nice cars that get my attention that I doubt I ever will. Been thinking of a Mondial or and older Alfa.
