I might agree. The 911 needs a lot of dressing up before I like it much (GT3 / GT2). The Cayman has a classic, what appears to me, 60's race car kind of look. I love it...except the nose. Not sure how I would change it, but the nose doesn't do much for me. The rear 3/4s though...wow. Best looking Porsche in my book as well. For me, the Cayman is the only (late model) Porsche that can be compared to Ferrari's in terms of grace and style. A GT3 looks majorly tough and purposeful, but it will never win any grace/style awards. If it was as rare and exotic as a 360, it would get a lot more respect.
Making cars in Mexico and Alabama are not recipes for a high quality marque. Are they trying to kill the brand?
They're trying to make a profit. German labor laws and European work weeks don't lend themselves to low-cost production. If you're making the BMW 6 Series, you can price them to recover your stiff labor costs. If you're selling New Beetles to college students, MSRP actually matters.
I can see his point. The Cayman tends toward the kind of balance and good but not insane power that made the 308/328/348 great drivers' cars. They look good, sound good, and respond well to the driver's skill. I don't think the Cayman has the seductive lines of the Ferraris, but it definitely has a look, and it's about perfect for street use. The CGT is up there in Enzo territory - you need a track to wind it out. Ditto all the 997 variants beyond the S.
Get the new 500 HP 2008 Cayenne Turbo. It will keep up with the both cars, I real sleeper!! You won't have the problem of woring if you bought the right car.
To me the Cayman looks like a 911 that was interrupted in devlopment. It was interrupted say around the 6th or 7th month of development, i.e., a partial birth abortion like. Hope no offence to anyone here. A comaprison with the fluid, sensual lines of the Ferrari 360? You must be joking right?
Not one bit The only problem with a Cayenne Turbo is slowing the thing down! lol You can't change the laws of physics.
Huh? The "not one bit" was in reference to whether I was kidding about the Cayman's styling being on par with Ferrari's (the only Porsche I feel that is). There is NO problem slowing down a Cayman. It has phenomenal brakes. But if you use a Cayenne Turbo to its full accelerative potential, and someone cuts you off...I don't care how good the brakes are. That is a butt-load of poundage to try to slow down quickly. (This it was in response to a separate post about the Cayenne...)
Interesting thread. I suppose my decision was based on which car would offer a four-year, 50,000 mile warranty, but then Porsche owners tend to be practical by nature. From one Ferrari lover to another: the Cayman S is a good ride. Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
dude are you serious with this thread. the 360 is alot faster, handles better, looks wayyyyy better, and more importantly its a FERRARI.
I wouldn't disagree. I was surprised to find the 360 mentioned in the same sentence with the Cayman. Having said that, driving the Cayman S in a spirited fashion is a breeze. Image Unavailable, Please Login
It's ugly when surrounded by a 355 Spider, 550, 360, etc., but what kind of comparison is that? In a real parking lot full of normal cars, I think it's a good-looking car in that awkward German way. Don't forget you can get a Cayman for tens of thousands less than any of those cars around it. As has been said a few times here, you buy a Porsche for a different reason than a Ferrari, Lambo, Aston, etc. My brother and I had 911s (964 and 993 flavors), and they're not about elegance as much as technical excellence. I haven't driven a Cayman, but the 911s and Boxster S I've driven would be fantastic daily drivers. I'd leave it at that. Again, the OP asked a weird question.
I wouldn't say the Germans don't do "beauty" (there are some very beautiful Mercedes, for example), but I WOULD say Porsche doesn't normally do beautiful. They do purposeful, nasty, intimidating, and bad-a$$...but not beautiful. Ferrari does beautiful. Until the Cayman. IMHO, of course. But Bullfighter is right. It still has an awkwardness to it...but just a bit. I think it is a home run. I'll take mine in Lapis Blue...with that amazing special leather interior shown in the C&D long term Boxster review featured this month. Que bella!
That prejudice explains a lot about the way the people so often react to my 944. Its not only red, but its good looking. So it can't be a Porsche but has to be a Ferrari.
German cars have never visually appealed to me and this goes for porsche for the most part (except the 911 particularly the older cars 70s-80s, oh and the 356 looked great) but the boxster, cayman, cayenne visually to me are bleh. In every other way though, fantastic.
The Cayman is the perfect car to just thrash the shi t out of on a daily basis. It's really about function. If you want something to thrash daily, the Cayman should be perfect for that. That's what it was built for.
It is funny you say that, because it makes it obvious what different levels of disposable income we are talking about here. I doubt many purchasers of a Cayman S would consider it prudent to trash out a $60k+ automobile. That is only for those people with so much disposable income, that they have a stable of much more expensive cars that they coddle, while "trashing out" inexpensive $60k+ cars. lol I would guess 90% of Caymans live a relatively pampered existance, even if used on a daily basis.
