I'm looking for a 2 seat coupe -- performance car. Occasional track day. Mostly for weekend pleasure drives and car events. Not to be used for commuting or work.

Which would be the better buy?

The Exige is a pretty track-focused car... but would be my pick of the three if you're into that sort of thing.

I have an Elise and love it.

The Cayman and Z4 are going to be far more comfortable and not as difficult to live with on a daily basis. Probably more reliable as well...

I'd vote for the Elise. Currently, it's basically the same car as the Exige, (less downforce and more rear visibility). I've not driven the Exige, I did the Elise. Very nice little pocket rocket. I'd have one.

I would take the exige if it was a weekend/track car. Second choice would be the Cayman.

The Cayman looks like it will be a fantastic car. That'd be my pick.

Ur looking at different price ranges no? Not sure what an exige will cost, but a cayman is gonna be pretty expensive (70k?) when all is said and done, the exige I think would be a good 10K cheaper; the BMW who knows. I would pick the cayman is price isnt a factor, the exige may not even have a stereo.

Exige will be about $55k if you can get one.
Cayman S will start at $60k and probably be $67k or so (for me).
    M version of a Z4 Coupe - ?? Speculating low - mid $50k range.

Price is always an issue ... but that's just another factor to consider here.

Who has driven these cars? Not one of them is available yet in the US, and I haven't even seen plans for bimmer to release a Z4 M Coupe.
How about a car you can actually buy? And drop the top when the sun comes out :)

The Exige is on it's way here.

Some people have already driven them.

One advantage the Exige currently has over the Elise is the extra space in the engine compartment... in which you can put a factory supercharger :)

Out of those three in this order

    1. Exige because it's just so hot!
    2. Cayman
    3. Z4 because it looks mainly like a regular Z4 and I want something that will stand out.

But I would definitely get the Elise over all 3 of those like other people have said.

Exactly. Plus, I want a closed car. The fact that the Exige will be imported in very limited numbers only adds to the appeal.

But I've heard the air conditioning in the Elise barely works (in some cars). It's contrary to what you want from a track car, but I would want functional AC in my Exige.

The Porsche and the BMW are undoubtedly better all-around cars, but they'll be available for a long time to come.

Negatives about the Exige would be the usefulness of the car, the inability to really do any overnight trips, and the availability of local service (Lotus dealer somewhat far away).

Cayman will be an awesome car, I have no doubt. Z4 Coupe will be a good car.

Exige will be good for the track. Period. Same as Elise. Friends rave about the elise, but for anything other than track work...fuhgedaboudit. The list of complaints is long and distinguished. But some people relish cars that are impossible to get into, have crazy, jarring rides, are loud and generally uncomfortable. Me? I got over that phase a while back.

Toyota engine, Lotus ECU. I doubt the Toyota dealer could do much for you to troubleshoot engine problems. However, from lurking on the Elise site, it appears that just about the only thing which works reliably and doesn't break on these cars is the engine!

I had very little trouble with my Elise. And once you're in, I found it very comfortable.

I know first hand of the A/C problems in the Elise...

Mine has been garaged for a while due to my lack of desire to drive it 1 1/2 hours to the dealership in 90+ degree humid heat with no A/C and heat blowing in through the windows from the radiator. Things quickly turned oven-like each of the times I took it out in this heat.

I do think they've sorted the A/C issues to an extent, but I still wouldn't bet on an Exige having "good" A/C.

One advantage the Exige (or at least the "US Exige") will have is that many of the problems have already been sorted by those of us who got the US Elise/111R early on.

If I can get an Exige at MSRP, I think I'll do that. There might only be 300 brought into the country. 2006 may be the only year too -- something about the Federal Exemption expiring. If I don't like it, I can sell it without losing much. Some track guru would want one.

I figure I can keep the Exige for fun and maybe lease a 5th generation GTi for daily duty.

My 2nd choice is the Cayman S, but at roughly $67k (equipped), it's not the kind of thing I'd want to drive downtown and let sit in a parking garage all day. The car would be fine with it ... but I wouldn't like it.

I'd rather spend $55k on my toy car and another $13k-$14k leasing a fun & practical commuter car.

    Aren't 2 better than 1?

The Boxster is one of the best handling cars you can buy, and the Cayman S
    is said to be better.
The looks are great and it will sound better.
Toyota makes great engines but they seem boring to me. Flame on.

Boring? Yamaha actually makes the engine - it is a lightweight high-tech high-revving powerplant! 190 horsepower (10 up on the Celica) at 7800 rpm and 133 pound-feet of torque at 6800 rpm. Do you have any idea how fun that is in a car that weighs only 2000 pounds?
Anyway, I still would like to drive an exige, and I'm normally a hardtop guy, but i'm afraid i'd feel a little TOO confined and isolated in a converted roadster that is essentially the true spiritual successor to the 550 spider, despite porsche's claims that the boxster fills that role.

Base Exige MSRP is $50,990. I would get an Exige.
