...have to YELL everything that he says? This is going to be a difficult 2 hours :(
CBS coverage was horrible, and Daly and Sheehan commentary was very pedestrian and colorless... Speed's coverage is much, much better.
Daly is way worse. His voice is like needles to my ears. He always goes off on some tangent then gets interrupted, then never comes back to it. Usually the person doing the interrupting is himself! Not to mention the fact that there were 2-3 yellows and they didn't even bother trying to figure out what happened/tell the viewers what happened.
They even cut the podium celebration short...didn't get to hear the Italian National Anthem, what's up with that? Interviews were extremely short too, didn't get to hear peter windsor or even Montoya. I'm amazed that I did though survive those 2 hours...if only we could turn the commentary OFF. Sure, I understand they're trying to market it to a larger audience, but still...
YOU MEAN SCREAMIN' SHAHEEN? Been dealing with his screaming on the motorcycle races for years, he usually calms down after a commericial or two, not today. ditto on Daly....
Shaheen doesnt seem to have a clue about F1. Everything he has to say is "So what do you think about XYZ, Derek?". He made no real contribution at all. The lap counter ticks downwards - he must find this fascinating as he had to have mentioned it like three times during the broadcast. This guy should go. Daly is pretty useless also. Though next to Shaheen, he comes across as wise as Moses. As I think others have mentioned earlier, preceding every mention of Alonso or Michael's name with either "the World Champion" or "the 7X World champion" is really annoying. I wish they assumed that the average viewer to CBS is not watching racing for the first or F1 for that matter. Jeepers! I just hope that Speed TV continues to have money to pay Ecclestone for broadcast rights, I would shudder to see CBS the sole broadcaster of F1. Then there will be no guarantee that we can see the whole event end to end. The idiots cut off Montoya's interview completely.
what i learned after watching CBS' broadcast of todays F1 race; 1) alan prost's name is actually "elaine Prost" 2) gasoline is very flamable 3) the australian grand prix was last weekend (damn it's been a long week) note to CBS, stick to golf and football please. joseph
Did anyone catch one of them saying that "The track was boring"??! I was stunned by such comment as Imola is one of the most incredible circuit in the world..
Haha, while i'll admit thee no speed, they were better than last year, however i would have like to see the enitre podium.
I happen to agree with that assessment. Imola is traditionally one of the most processional races in the F1 calendar. The only tracks worse in this regard are Monaco and Magny Cours. 2005 was an exception. Imola is perhaps an excellent track to visit as it is close to the factory and there are lots of nice places to visit nearby. I would love to go there and watch a race but I still believe that the racing there sucks. I guess when Derek raced the first sector was devoid of chicanes completely till you got to Tosa. It was a lot more flowing back then.
Funny thing is that here on the east coast, it has been so rainy today, CBS probably got their best Sunday afternoon share they've had in a long time. Of course they'll correlate the share increase to the "fine" broadcast team and will reward Shaheen and Daly with a return engagement I have to say, Derek Daly has potential; he needs the right situation. His walk down the grid at the US GP; literally chatting up anybody he can, was the most interesting part of US GP coverage - even Peter Windsor is imitating him. But Shaheen should go to NASCAR. The only commentator to do a worse job on an F1 broadcast was Mike Joy at the inaugural USGP at Indy; "...he's getting caught up by.... (can't remember)...by....(still can't identify who)...by that OTHER car." It was Hakkinen.
Between the two of them, Daly& Shaheen...I've got the worst headache! I basically had to turn the volume almost off =(
Complain, complain, complain. You guys should remember the days when the only way to find out who won a Grand Prix was to wait about 10 days for AutoWeek to show up in the mailbox! So what if CBS' coverage was imperfect? It is 1000 times better than what we had to put up with back in the '70s, and I have no real complaints about the coverage of today's race. Lighten up with the criticism of the coverage, guys, or it could disappear.....
I learned that Imola is boring and brutal. And that everybody is constantly crashing...over the curbs and plunging down into Rivazza. Sheehan reminded me of Trump: yells all the time for no good reason. But the worst was the constant talking over the pit radio. At least the Speed guys shut up when they hear that chatter.
There was plenty silent drama watching timing and scoring live on formula1.com hours before CBS started their yammering......
The worst part is their lack of familiarity with the sport (how is that even possible considering Daly was a driver!!) led them to completely overlook the fact that besides the wheel to wheel battle between MS and FA, there was an equally tense and dramatic battle of minds going on between Briatore and Brawn/Todt. They absolutely spanked Flavio, they forced him into pitting Alonso and revealed that Schumacher had been sandbagging the entire time, when he ripped off a lap that was 2 seconds quicker than his previous while Alonso was in. That was absolutely brilliant and it was completely missed by the announcers.
The one guy just keep interrupting himself, he would start with something that could have proved interesting only to be cut short and talk about something else, never going back to the first subject very add like. Otherwise it was nice to see F1 on regular TV, even if they did cut alot of the fun stuff before and after the race short.
True and they really don't even get the basics of today's aero cars that make passing impossible: Every time Alonso's car was washing out underneath him because he lost the downforce on the front axle they were shouting about another driver error. I'm not defending Alonso here, but those weren't errors. Just like Kimi didn't make mistakes last year when he lost the front downforce while trying to pass in a turn.
To be honest, this shouldn't have come as a surprise to anyone. CBS coverage is always terrible. And what is quite possibly even more unfortunate than today's deplorable coverage is the fact that they get to cover 3 more races! not to mention they are some of the best of the year.....Silverstone and Monaco. What a shame. Oh well, at least the results were good! Hopefully we'll see Ferrari's competitiveness continue.
I didn't think it was that bad. It's nice to see it on a major station. They are just using the feed they are getting. They didn't have their own cameras there.
