My best guess (get out your $.02) is that it relates to your MAP sensor (Manifold Absolute Pressure). In all the engine control schemes I'm aware of, the MAP sensor is read in the moments between key on and the engine running on its own. During that short time the MAP sensor will report ambient atmospheric pressure to the engine computer.

The computer probably has an expected range of values for atmospheric pressure which it can use to decide if the sensor has gone wacky. If the sensor value does fall out of the expected range, the computer would set the code and illuminate the CEL.

If the MAP sensor is failing, the computer will not have a handle on engine load, and will not be able to compensate for your elevation. Both of these will, in technical turns, screw up engine fueling.
