Anyone know if its safe to remove one of these...and if so....how? Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
I would suggest going to a Automotive Window shop and paying the removal fee. They certainly will have tools and chemicals for a safe job. Cable removal should be easy.
I've installed and removed them before. Both components just have an adhesive backed foam on them. Work a single edge razor blade around the edges and they will both pop off. Or you can go to a windshield shop, pay them $50 to do the same thing and then feel like you've been taken driving away.
I'd go at it with 3M Adhesive remover and dental floss. Use the floss as a "cable saw" to cut through the, softened, adhesive.
That's what I did to the one thru my ENGINE COVER!! LOL! Have to weld that up, one of these days..... A glass shop would probably have the suitable plug for it, tho.....it'll leave a hole.
Hmmmmm now I'm really on the fence.....does everyone think the glass is drilled or not? I cant imagine it is.....but I have ZERO experience with these things.
Not drilled. Those things were capacitively coupled - the signal passes from a metal plate on one side to a plate on the other side. It's simply held on with glue. You should be able to safely and easily remove it by applying heat (blow drier or heat gun) on each side and gently prying on the side you're heating using a putty knife. Jedi
Good to know! Thanks guys. It's been a long time but I recall a base that did need a hole, I think the one on my 1977 has a hole thru the metal....
What he said..........or what I said earlier. I think the earlier (more valuable) ones did require a hole, but that was before our marvelous and never ending technology progression solved the dilemma. I wish it was as easy to repair the holes on my center console where the PO mounted their bag phone............and we used to think we were so cool talking to people on a telephone the size of a brief case while driving around!
Blow dryer plus razor blade. I had the exact same antenna on the exact same spot. Took it right off no problems
Screwdriver and a hammer outta get that right off....then plug the hole with some duct tape. You can probably find some black duct tape that will cover that right up and not look too far out of place. Good luck!!! PDG j/k
Being both an amateur and professional radio guy I have placed and replaced a bunch of glass mount antennas. There will be no hole in the glass and both the dental floss and razor blade methods will work fine. The tape holding them on is, as mentioned, unexciting foam tape, comes off with some sort of adheasive remover like Goof-Off. Have at it. My car has a hole in the console from either a phone or that silly stalk-mount Blaupunkt radio. Who thought either one of those were a good idea? I put a cigarette lighter in the hole. Now I have power for GPS or charging the phone, but really, I'd rather have untouched leather.
Just remember to always use a new razor blade straight from the pack, as a blade with even a very slight nick can/will scar the glass. Richard
I've got one in the middle of my rear deck lid. Unfortunately they did put a hole in to mount mine. I cut the curly antenna off but still need to pull the base and get the hole fixed one of these days. I would use the dental floss and hair dryer trick. Safest way to go with the glass!!
