Hi Barry, Yes I take your point, & perhaps I was a little harsh, the new Alfieri is a Stunning Design & I am told it will go into production so it is not just a show car, I still find it hard to imagine a Maserati Levante SUV but hey Porsche have been doing it for years so i guess it is part of Maseratis future keeping the Tridente alive, just for the record i picked up the latest Ghibli brochure from the Melbourne dealer recently, to my suprise not even a mention of the original Ghibli, a great opportunity lost in my opinion to show the lineage from the Classic Maserati Coupe to the new 4 door model, Regards, David Z
Usually I try not to get involved in these types of discussions. But I think the Ghibli name used on a 4-door was not a very good decision. In my opinion, the new Alfieri should have carried the Ghibli name, and the Alfieri name should have been saved for a special, low volume supercar. But this is my opinion, and my opinion only.... But hey, I am just a potential customer for them. No more, no less... Mike
With your collection of cars and passion for them Mike they should want to die for you to become a new car customer. You'd make a terrific customer and bridge to lure in more of the vintage owners. I've seen plenty enough of the young & beautiful new money types that seems to be their ownership image. Oh wait! I think I just insulted you! You know what I mean. You're authentic and don't have to told how to spell Mazzerati! +1 on the use of the Ghibli name. I think it should be retired. There's nothing swooshy or coupish about the current model. I own a Ghibli II (of sorts) and I wasn't thrilled with that use of the name either and I like the car. I guess Maserati has just run out of wind? LOL
Hello George and All, I would encourage you to go to Cento Anni in Chicago, if it is not snowing. Show the new Maserati Owners your enthusiast's passion and your Merak! Your Masserati is their connection to the history. We shouldn't make this conversation either "Classic" or "Modern," it would serve the brand better as both "Classic" and "Modern" cars. I bought my 2005 Quattroporte because my 1991 Alfa Romeo 164S (120K miles) & 1995 164Q (110K miles) were no longer road worthy for vacation trips. Back in 2005, I didn't know much about the Maserati history except that it was a Fiat sibling of Alfa Romeo, Ferrari and Lanca. However, I loved the sports car feel of big Italian sedans. Only after joining the clubs did I begin to appreciate Maserati's racing and GT models legacy. I am also a current Ferrari & Alfa Romeo and have owned Fiats in the early 1970s. I drove my Quattroporte to Monterey, California this summer from Philadelphia. My excuse was to win the "Furthest Driven" award at Concorso Italiano for Maserai Days. I knew I had no chance at a class award but also knew current owners wouldn't drive their cars cross-country either. It was a blast to drive a car built for long distance driving. My Quatttoporte has power, control, comfort, speed, style and a wonderful entertainment system. MY QP could handle speeds of 80 to 110 mph all day long and it didn't matter if the temperature was 105 in Texas or 45 in Yosemite. My daughter and I traveled with a month worth of clothes in our fitted Maserati luggage. The modern Maseratis give new owner the chance to experience Maserati passion. I own a 1982 308 Ferrari and a 1994 Alfa Romeo spyper and surely wouldn't want to drive them across country as a 62 year-old. Lastly, the head of Maserati Classiche Division gave a fantastic presentation in Monterey about where Maserati is heading over the next five years. He showed a video of the launch of the Ghibli model at the Geneva auto show. It started with the "Strike: video from the Supper-bowel and describe how Maserati is blending the vintage into the modern. I was impressed with seeing the first ever TV commercial from an Italian automaker. this signaled their willingness to stay in the US market for a change. I wish they didn't have to build a SUV and agree with Mike that the name Ghibli should have been used for the Alfieri. I am also sadden with the split of Ferrari from the Fiat group. I guess it speaks to the challenge of running a niche automaker in the modern global environment. I expect to see a Ferrari SUV one day too! Thanks for having a wonderful conversation and thank you Mike for joining the discussion. Below is a link to the strike video which has been taken down and a picture from Maserati's website showing Cento Anni from Piazza-Grande, Modena-18 Septembre 2014 showing both modern & classic Maseratis. Barry, was nice meeting you and Alexandra (and stalking you along the route I agree with you that Merak, Mistral, Ghibli I and Khamsin owners should weigh the possibility of their appearance in the coming events. Gransports were the vintage in this one!! and I drove all the way from Jersey hoping to see a 3500 or older (not even a BiTurbo?!). Well, the event was nice, I met nice people who share the fun of owning both old rivals, and the Italian Embassy reception was awesome! Regards Selim
Should have come to the Maserati Owners National Meet in the Poconos in June. MNA was there as well. Image Unavailable, Please Login
Hey Selim, It was nice to meet you too! Thanks for you support. Even when it comes to modern cars, it was just the 3 of us from the Pennsylvania & New Jersey region. You, Joe and I. No excuse for others not to drive their modern Maseratis!
Joe, You are right, there were plenty of wonderful vintage and classic Maseratis Poconos. I was there too! Also, the were plenty of vintage and classic Maseratis at Concorso Italiano in Monterey. Please see my "Monterey or Bust" tread to see some of those Maseratis.
The pictures have been posted from the Miami event, 7 November 2014 and from as far I can tell there were no vintage Maseratis there either. Weather was no excuse, it make me wonder if vintage owners have any connection to the factory?
