I just bought a 355, to pass certification it needed new brakes. Ferrari had a 2 week backorder on them, so he (previous owner) managed to get some Ceramic brakes and included at no extra cost.

When I brake, however, i hear a squeeling sound, especially when i am trying to be light on the brakes. The sound is like the sound brakes make when they are ready to be changed.

My friend who races motorcycles says that this is normal as the brakes are just breaking in and starting to mate to the calipers.

Is there any truth in this statement? Is this normal?

Thanks in advance for any input.

are you talking about the discs or pads? if just the pads then yes, there is a bedding in procedure for racing pads and they will squeel if not done properly.

from what i understand the are around 20 grand for the whole break system and need to be replaced after a while of good track use. i know somone that had the whole right side of his cs go into a tire wall (i was there when it happenned and it wasnt pretty) some bad damage to the right front of the car. it or course tore up a bunch of electronical stuff along with ruining a 5g brake. so if u have the money a just have to have the extra braking performance, ge them. if not, they are just worth the money. good luck making the decision and i hope this helped.

I assume you mean he put racing pads on your standard 355 brakes. (Not that he changed out rotors, calipers, pads, and probably wheels to put in a carbon-ceramic brake system like on CS or Enzo... which would be waayyyy expensive.) Given we're just talking racing pads here...

Yep, that is the normal sound of racing pads... they're designed to stop hard and take lots of heat. But they are NOT designed to be quiet...

If they are racing pads, they will not get quieter... may even get louder... may even make noise when you're not braking at all. But they will always squeal badly under gentle braking and as you come to a complete stop.

Worse, if they aren't designed to stop well cold (many racing pads have to get hot before the stop well), then they are actually dangerous on the street, where generally speaking the pads are never hot.

    What brand/model are the pads?

My '97 355 GTB does this too. There's nothing that can be done about it, according to the technicians at FX Performance. I've learned to get around it by braking harder at the last minute (when I'm going around 5mph).

There's also nothing worse than pulling up to a stoplight next to someone and having to wince at the embarassment the sound causes.

My 355 made all kinds of squeeks when coming to a stop. In fact all the 355's a test drove did it too. Something about those stock pads. Anyway, I recently switched them out to Porterfield R4S pads. Big improvement! No more noise, 50% less dust and they bite much better upon initial engagement. These are considered a high performance street pad, not race pad, but are definitely a step up from the stop pads. The R4 is their track pad.

I agree. The Porterfield pads solve the problem.
