How is this related to timing belts? ;)

The Higgs Boson gives the timing belts (and the valve gear) their mass, of course.

I'm a big fan of the LHC, but better give some props to the fine folks here in the USA who've gotten about the same results at Fermilab's tevatron...

A hard working bunch that is being shut down due to lack of funding. Same kind of lack of funding that put a stop to the project in Texas that would have been a huge step forward a decade or more back.

And determine their service intervals as to when they will fall apart.

The service interval is relativistic - it is lengthened by driving your car at higher speeds.

Well, yes, and no. The current data indicates mid 4.5 sigma confidence whereas it takes 5.0 or more to justify the word certain and validated.

Fermilab is also announcing some data on the same particle based on data colledted on the machineshut down just over a year ago.

I thought I read that they were doing a review comparing the two expiriment's data and were expecting to raise the confidence to 5.0.

At any rate, they invited Higgs himself to the announcement party, so I figured they were going to say they had it.

I have a little confession - I was secretly hoping that they would NOT find it at the expected energy, thus forcing an exciting revision of particle theory.

you and Hawking too ... he lost a hundred dollar bet today ;)

Not that he was necessarily betting "against" the evidence for Higgs, but science does tend to take its biggest leaps when something totally unexpected is found. Today's data is, indeed, verification of something very much expected :)

By the way, i heard the confidence has been lifted to 4.9 sigma ...

Higgs must be the proudest man on the planet right now. A great day for him and for science. Congrats to all involved all around the world.

I am very glad that he lived to see it verified.

That may still come when they verify the earlier reports of particles going faster then c. I am an old die hard and don't believe it. But be careful what you wish for.

That was already resolved (if i know to what you are referring): measurement/equipment error.

no particles traveled faster than the speed of light.
