I found this totally riveting footage. Also interesting is all the peoples comments about it.

They really destroyed the airplane getting it out of the water.

This is the accident where the person who died was connected with the Obama birth-certificate issue, IIRC.

That's interesting. I've never given much thought to how manufacturers come up with TBO, (but always kind of wondered). I guess they run 'em and tear them down at certain intervals for inspection. Doing this enough times, they can come up with some pretty reliable data.

(fairly obvious when ya think about it I guess).

Do not understand all the ins and outs but being able to just get the TBO more than doubled is kind of scary. That engine was toast.

You know, how do you go from an engine that has a certification of 3800 hours to then be OK for 8000 hours. Kind of beggars belief that an extention can be this big for a commercial plane. Someone please enlighten me.

At least the trolling for tiger sharks was unsuccessful. 8000 hours, holy cow. Turbines are tough, but that is a lot of hours.

There are STC's (Supplemental Type Certificates) that extend TBO by having more frequent and intrusive inspections than originally specified. P&W may also have programs that do something similar. The PT-6 is one of the most widely used turbine engines ever, and known to be very robust.

I thought TBO's were more set in stone than that. Good to know. I am going to guess intrusive inspections were blown off or sharp pencil'd. Don't remember all the details.

An STC is subject to the same regulations as the original certification basis (or possibly newer regulations), so it is 'set in stone'.

There are things that make planes go down, they are mostly human error. That I can somehow accept.
BUT, going down due to maintenance problems or short cuts during servicing I cannot accept on a commercial plane.
For me a commercial plane is anything that transports me where I have to pay for the journey.
There is a case being looked into at the moment where a famous French footballer was transported from France to Cardiff, Wales just in February this year.
Turns out, (or will do) that the pilot did not have a commercial license. He died in the same accident but someone is going to have to pay out big time because the French football club want the millions of dollars for their star player who no longer exists. Let's see how that one pans out.

Happened years ago. I keep hearing from the single PT6 guys (Pilatus, TBM, Meridian) that they practically never fail, but clearly they do. I've met at least two people who have had a PT6 fail, and read about a number of singles with PT6s which have failed. Including a brand new Meridian on a ferry flight in the Bahamas...
