Brian Crall has posted in the past that the 360 transmission runs hot, thus requiring regular oil changes lest damage result. I read somewhere that the Challenge race car came with its own transmission cooler. Based on the parts diagrams, it appears that the Challenge cooler (part 18 in the upper diagram) might, just might, drop into the 360/CS (the 360 is shown in the lower diagram) -- the pickup/return locations are as shown in the lower diagram. I don't know if the Challenge car has special airflow directed to the cooler though.

On the other hand, it looks like the 360/CS use a heat exchanger coupled to the engine cooling system (see the part marked "Tab. 25" in the lower diagram). I can't tell for sure, but maybe the 360/CS use this instead of the Challenge cooler.

Has anyone tried using the Challenge cooler on the 360/CS? Just wondering if it might help prolong transmission life!

The Challenge cooler wont do any good unless you are going 100mph to get some air through it.

Just use good oil and change it often.

Here's the additional drawing that shows more.

You'll see the air scoop in # 22.

If you look closely you would see that on the standard 360's there is a center support on the engine side of the rear grille to support the bonnect mechanism, etc. That is not present on the Challenge car. The Challenge car appears to use a quick-lock post for the rear bonnet which is #27 in the drawing.

That oil cooler would then apparently go up against the rear Challenge grille, and the scoop would feed air to it for cooling. The mount for the cooler is as expensive as the cooler itself. So it must also be a form of heat shield from exhaust heat.

So as Rifledriver stated you'd have to be going pretty fast to get any decent air flow through that radiator core.

It's a pretty neat idea, however.

Thanks for the additional information and diagram -- that's very interesting. Too bad the Challenge cooler isn't readily applicable as it sounds like it's an issue worth looking into. Frankly up until I looked into this, I wasn't aware that the 360/CS even had the oil/water transmission cooler.

It is an interesting concept which has merit.

Just tough to find a place to put that cooler on the 360's where it would be effective!
