I've been advised by several people that changing the cam timing on a 360 from the stock range of 657-659 to 661 will lead to a benefit in performance.. I know challenge cars run up to 665 and they are restricted from going any further by the rules..

So, in short, do you guys recommend it? What would be the ideal timing? What are the risks?

All that will happen is that the power band will be moved up the rev range a little. It is good for race cars as they spend all their time revving hard, but on the road you'll not notice it really.

There are better gains to be had from moving the inlet cam timing a little, but this cannot be read by the SD2, and needs to be done the old school way.

    Phil,
Thank you so much for your reply. Could you elaborate on the inlet cam gain procedure?

You need to dial in the cams with a DTI, it involves a fair amount of engine disassembly and lots of time and $$$, and absolute faith in your engine tuner that he knows what to do and how to use his equipment properly.

Basic rule of thumb..... retarding cam timing will move power up the rev range at the expense of low end drivability. Changing overlap will help maintain a wide torque band... but you could spend MONTHS of trial and error to get small gains... not worth the $$.

Just make sure the timing is per manual, and you'll have a good car for all occasions.

On the N-GT Michelotto cars, the exhaust variator is deleted, and this fact has led to some mis understanding, as their exhaust cams are set quite differently.
