My dealer just submitted my order 2 days ago for a March build. I inquired about a back up camera and carbon fiber surround for the media unit. They told me that it is submitted and can no longer be changed. This doesn't sound right. Any experiences with changes made prior to the build date?

    TIA

I depends on the status the car is at. My understanding is that when the order is entered into their system (Modis), it goes to status 10 first - that the order was accepted. The next status is 10Red, meaning the order is locked and cannot be changed. Then it goes to other statuses along the way - 20, 30, etc. until it is delivered to you.

It sounds like your order went to 10Red right away, which may be possible given it was just entered and is a March build. In my personal experience, my orders have been entered 6-7 months ahead of time and I've had a month or so to make changes.

I *think* the "build date" is when the car actually goes down the assembly line. Between 10Red and the actual "build date" they are probably cutting leather, stitching seats, painting the body, building the engine, etc. I don't recall 100% the timeline - been a couple years since I've been to the factory.

Maybe there is some other way the dealer can make the change for you.

Good luck! I love my california!

Seems strange that a dealer won't make the phone call to try to increase the customer's spend

Just read post above which kind of tallies with my experience and suggests there is very little backlog - I was recently offered a January build instead of Autumn for an immediate spec - in other words the build was scheduled and by implication could have gone straight to '10Red'

    But 2 days......

Thanks. It is probably a good thing if I can't change it. I was inquiring about a back up camera and they're pricing that out at $3500! Oy! I will turn my head all day long for 3500 bucks!

jcavalie is spot on with his observations regarding orders. "Red 10" means the car has been scheduled for (imminent) production and a dealer cannot make any changes. Used to be that a phone call or two to FNA would possibly result in changes to a "Red 10" order but 18 -24 months ago a memo was sent to dealers saying that would no longer be possible - no exceptions. Once an order reaches "White 10" the factory can move it to "Red 10" at any time. No advance notice given. My suggestion to those who have new cars on order is to double check with their dealer to verify - in writing - the precise configuration that will be/has been entered into Modis - obviously before "Red 10".

In addition, a dealer can enter as many orders as they want into Modis, regardless if they have allocations for said orders, but an order is only valid - meaning the car will be built - when FNA/Italy assigns the order an Order Number in Modis. VINs are normally assigned once the car actually goes into production.

My memory was wrong, you are correct, from my build sheet the price was $3,463. However in a $200,000+ car that may be somewhat hard to see out of the rear while backing, it is really worth it, and a drop in the bucket ... a big drop but a drop anyway. Visibility is really pretty good though, but the camera spots that little stuff like bikes & kids that you would not see. And it makes it VERY easy to back into a spot and not hit the curb.

Now that you put it that way, I will try to get them to add it. If I run over one of my kids, my wife will be pissed that I didn't get the $3500 option!

Actually my car was in Red 10 when I called my dealer yesterday to see if I can add the upgraded stereo to my order. The dealer called me back today and let me know they were able to add it on to my order. I'd have to say I've dealt with 3 Ferrari dealerships and I've had nothing but good experiences with service so far, and now with purchasing.
