Ok guys if anyone wants a awesome photo outfit for $500, pm me (nikon D50 with 3 lens) Now for the meat of this post and why I switched........... So saturday I go to the camera shop to get a Nikon D300, (which I have been lusting after since Christmas) and I played around with it, ($1899 body only). Two of my friends shoot Canon, but I have never even held one. So I ask the guy just for grins and giggles to see the Canon 40D, and I first noticed that it felt heavy, but not massively so like the D300, plus the grip seemed deeper and just fit my hand like a glove, then I fired it up, and at the first shot I was in love, I tell you this thing is the SMOOTHEST SEXIEST sounding camera I have ever seen. and he says to me, hold down the shutter, and DANG!!!!!! what a sound, the thing shoots an impressive 6.5 shots a second !!! the D300 can do 8 but you need a battery grip. So then I say so it sounds better than the D300, feels better than the D300 and, shoots as fast, what about the menus ? Will lo and behold they are easier to navigate, (they are lined up horizon across the screen, vs. in "layers" on the Nikon. So then I look at the rear LCD, and it's 3 INCHES ! same as the D300, plus CMOS sensor, and DIGIC III processor (same one that in the holy grail Canon Mark III) It's a 10.1 mega pix, vs. the D300 12MP but I never blow up over 16x20 so the resolution is the same at those sizes. I say then, well I love it but, I have three nikon lens already and don't wanna buy new glass also. and he says what if I tell you, you can get the Canon ($1,299) plus a 28-135 Image Stabilized lens, a 50MM 1.8 lens and a long lens like my 70-300 nikon lens, all for the SAME PRICE AS JUST THE D300 body !!! Well needless to say I left with the Canon, one week later I'm Loving it. I would own Nikon or Canon now with NO HESITATION ! Ok enough, for now, just thought I'd share in case someone else is in a similar situation............
AHhhh, ok, thanks for posting i am looking for an 85mm 1.4 You should have no problem selling that setup, d50 is a great camera
Welcome to the fold. Very, especially how Canon does it. At least Nikon's Live View allows autofocus. Personally, the only time I'd consider using it is underwater when my mask is in the way. Otherwise, I prefer the viewfinder (which, on the 40D is very nice... not quite as good as the 5D+, but a vast improvement from Canon's other offerings). Besides, I don't want my sensor getting hot.
I'd be curious to see some high-ISO shots (1600, 3200) from the 40D. This is where I think the D300 really shines, but I haven't seen anything from Canon to compare with. I'm a Nikon guy, but only because I had a zoom lens from an old 35mm camera back in the days. They both make awesome stuff.
How much of a deal would you give me on the 50mm? I couldn't use the Af (I have a D40) so I am hesitant but if I could get it cheap, I could live with MF. edit: forgot to mention that the reason I love my D40 so much is that it feels so much better in my hands than a Canon.
I wanna keep it all together, but at 100$ new the 50mm 1.8 will DRAMATICALLY improve your photography !!! BUY One !
Chebbys vs Fords, Fords vs Chebbys. Nikon = Chebbys. Cannon = Fords. Friends don't let friends drive Fords.
agreed do you use one Mike ? I have always admired you pics... i am thinking about renting a 70-200vr 2.8 and/or an 85mm 1.4 soon i mostly do pics of my son, and family shots an I have seen amazing portraits from both of these lens. i figure 50-60 dollars to play with these for the week as a rental would be a good idea before putting out 900 or 1500 dollars for the glass regards
Thanks for the compliment! I used it a few times but I really don't do many portrait shots. Since I mostly do automotive shots I need a lens that's a little wider than the 85mm. The few times I did use it, I was really impressed!
I think Nikon is gone, but I have bought 2 lenses for the Canon already, so I'm selling the 28-135 Image Stabilized USM that came on the Canon if anyone wants it ? I bought a 50mm and the Tamron 28-75MM 2.8
Welcome to the Canon club. I've been a member since the EOS-1. One word of advice, yes the "L" lenses are expensive, and yes they are worth it! Cheers, Kurt O.
Just the 1.8 for what I do I didn't see paying extra for the 1.4 or 1.2 we did a shoot in the store (with standing up batteries) and printed them out the 1.4 looked sharpest surprising of the bunch, The 1.8 if you were not a photogragher you couldn't tell any diffrence in all 3.
