Just as I was about to pull into the garage, the ABS light came on, the power steering went dead, the AC went to sauna mode and the stereo display started to flicker. - all at the same time. Lucky I only had 50 meters left to drive!

Considering the water pump / serpentine belt (What is the proper english word for this thing anyway?) had been making some noises on startup lately, I'm assuming it's to blame. So the question is; how hard is it to replace it? Anyone had a go themselves? Since the 456 toolkit even comes with a spare, I feel obliged to give it a try myself!

Its not hard... there are 2 separate belts one for the Alternator and A/C and the other for steering and water pump.

If steering and alternator both went out together, its actually more likely your crank pulley separated causing neither belt to spin.

Either way belts have to come off..

    Remove alternator cooling hose
    Remove alternator cover
Remove steering pump cover. Now you will have access to the front of the engine. Alternator needs to be loosened and tensioner on the Power steering belt needs to both be loosened then the belts can come off.

Now you need to assess if the crank pulley is intact or needs to come off too for rebuilding.

Recommended to change the bearing in each tensioner pulley.

Assemblely is opposite... tension setting frequency is in the work shop manual.

If that all younare doing, its easier to do from underneath (car on a lift) if you do any coolant or thermostat work at the same time, then removing the large coolant pipes at the top to the radiator will give you plenty of access to everything from the top

Thanks for that Nick!! Yes indeed everything went out at the same time.. or to be exact, the battery light had been coming on for a few days.. then the ABS-light was on for a few minutes before everything else stopped at the same time.. My friend who normally helps me out is out of town, so if it is indeed the crank pulley I think I'm calling my mechanic this time around :D

Do not use the belt in the tool kit, get a fresh one.

I don’t even use the tools from the kit I have to admit :) keeping them safe!

anyway I tried running the engine again. Warning lights are all gone. The battery light was on for a while but disappeared when I rev’ed a bit. Perhaps it’s the alternator and not the belt / crank pulley ?
