I am doing an oil and transmission fluid change this week and have decided that I will change the motor mounts at the same time. I ordered new CS mounts (Went this route instead of the Challenge units because I don't mind a little comfort in the car) and all new bolts and nuts. Looking through service records since the car was new, and it appears that it has never been done. I spoke to the previous owner as well, and he said that he does not think it was done either. Luckily, he did have the transmission mount changed though about 1 year ago.

Anyways, it appears to be very easy to do (easier than any other car I have worked on at least), but while watching many people do it, they jack up from under the engine to remove and install the mounts. Is this good for the engine? I realize it's only an inch or so and probably very little pressure, but there's just something about jacking up a motor from the bottom of it that seems weird to me. It would certainly be a first for me. I guess I obviously don't want to pull it though, so it's my only option, but wanted to ask here first. If I do it, I plan on using a large piece of wood and padding on top of the jack.

Any tips or suggestions are appreciated before I dive in. Thank you everyone.

Wire brush the exposed threads on the fixing bolt and spray some release oil. From what i remember i let off both , but only removed the bolt from 1 at a time. You will need new nuts and bolts if your old ones come out like mine, the threads were damaged as the old nut came off the bolts.
The block of wood on a trolley jack works fine, just make it as big as you can and spread the weight.

Thanks. I ordered all new nuts and bolts. I will use a long piece of wood and padding.

So you loosed both bolts, but the. Actually only fully removed one bolt at a time?

Yes, you want to be able to lift the engine slightly to get the weight off the mount, remember the new mount will be taller than the old one, due to its age etc

And remember to not tighten down the first new one until the second one is in

Take not if the compression of the old mm’s vs new mm’s. It’s amazing how far bad mm’s compress.

Will do. If they really are the original ones, I feel like all the support has got to be gone. Will be nice to see the results.

You’ll notice a big difference between shifts from second to third. I highly suggest help from a buddy to lift the motor while you fit the mount. I assume you’re doing the two rear mounts only? The mount toward the front is much more difficult from what I recall on a 430.

Yes, I am just doing the 2 motor mounts. The transmission mount was replaced 1 year ago by the previous owner. He verified that the motor mounts have never been changed though.

This is from personal experience. The CS mounts are stiffer than the stock mounts. When I replaced mine, the car would vibrate at idle so bad that the vibration constantly tickled the bottom of my feet. Drove me crazy. Had them removed in short order and replaced with original replacement pieces. Feet are happy now.

How so? The connection looks good, but do you think I should remove it, clean it, and reinstall it? Or just wire brush it while installed?

2 minute job to take it off and wire brush the connection, bad earths cause issues on these

Thanks. Funny you mentioned it because while doing this job I noticed all the grounds and did wipe them down but that’s it. I will follow your recommendation. Any torque specs when reattaching?

While you are at it, why not do the tranny mounts?

But did you have any issues before? Vibration, rattling, clunky shifting?
I’m hoping that replacing mine will quell some of the vibrations I get in the cabin, mostly at idle.

Less vibration for sure. Fixing the timing and replacing the transmission mount will reduce it more soon.
