I know that this question has been asked before and that other has told us it can be done… But how?

I have a new 355 challenge pump that I want to put into the car before spring. But when looking down where the pump sits it is hard to imagine how it can be done. Does anyone care to explain how to do it? What parts needs to be removed and what are the steps. I recently changed the PSP on my BMW 740 and that was a 1 hour job, really easy but this looks like a couple of days, at least ;-)

This pump needs to go down there :-o

Johan, it is also a 1 hour job for the 355 .......................... once the engine is out !!! :)
I do not think it is that difficult with the engine in the car, much much easier than the water pump.
    I would:
    - remove the engine lid (much better access there)
    - disconnect the 4 fuel lines on the left side and secure them on the left side of the engine bay
    - unscrew the fuel blok from the PA tank support end secure it on the right side of the engine bay
    - remove the left airbox (on top of the throtle bodies). Not so easy but you will gain a much bettrer access to the pump and the pipes
    - remove as much oil as you can from the tank and remove it

Then the pump and the tensioner should be quite accessible. Be careful not to drop too much oil in the center of the V as it could end on the timing belts.

Have you found a steering rack?

We are doing it on my car right now. It is not that bad to do with the engine in the car. You have to move a few things but you basically have to crawl into the engine compartment to get to the pump. I have a question. Is the pump a higher pressure pump of more volume? I have a Challenge rack that I will be putting in but does this pump damage the stock rack because of too much pressure?

Hi Eric and thanks for the tips, sounds reasonable...
No CH rack yet though. Brake brackets are on their way, will contact you when I have confirmation that they are ok.

I dont think you need to be concerned about the pump ruining the rack. The CH pump should have a lower pressure/volume if I have understand it correctly. I have heard of people having different combinations of pump and rack without any problems...

I have read that also on this forum where the challenge pump makes the biggest change in the rack fill. But I could be wrong.

What's the benefit of the challenge pump?

Hopefully less power assistance and more feel, at least in combination with the quicker rack...

Perfect, the 355 could certainly use that!

It is not a huge difference but it helps. Used to own a 355 with the Fiorano handling pack and it was definitely better than the standard rack...

I have done many PS pump replacements. No magic, just nuts and bolts. It is easier to remove the pulley prior to removing pump.

Once the pump is out the water pump can be accessed too.
