Hi everyone I had a question perhaps it is a stupid one if it is then I’m sorry. On some 308’s the speedometer will only display the speed up until 85 miles per hour where as on others the gauge will depict a much height possible top speed. Is it possible to switch the speedometer to the type depicting the speeds rather then the one with the red bar that does not show the speed? What was Ferrari’s reasoning for the use of this? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

It wasn't Ferrari's decision to use the 85 mph speedometer -- the US gov't passed a law with the idea that we would slow down if the speedometer only went to 85 mph -- wrong again! ;)

    Do a search on:

    palo alto speedometer

They are just one US-based instrument shop that could help you, but searching on their name will get you a lot of relevant "speedometer" threads. Good luck with the project -- it'll only be a plus to make the change to a proper speedometer IMO too.

I changed out the speedo on my Triumph as soon as it was out of warranty back in '82. Still have the 85mph in my truck, ain't going nowwhere in a hurry in that thing.

You can have it re-calibrated and the face re-silk screened at www.paspeedo.com They have done several speedos and tachs for me over the years and their silk screening looks OEM. They are the best in the industry and the cost will only be a few hundred bucks.

When I bought an 81 308 many years ago from a Ferrari dealer, the speedo in the car was a 180 MPH speedo with "Dino" on it. They had changed it for the original owner a little earlier, and handed me the original 85 MPH speedo with the purchase. So, it is doable to change out the original, but I am not sure if you will need to put in a different speed generator or not.

I just bought a 180 mph unit to replace the paltry 80 mph one in the car. Anyone know exactly how to set the odometer to the same mileage as the old one?

I'd hate to damage this new unit trying to figure this out...
