CHANGING YOUR WHEEL CENTERCAP HORSES.

dont you guys hate it when you get another ferrari and the centercap horsies are faded and cracked?

these buggers are going up and up in price. i had a few old ones laying around i could not make myself throw away.

i ordered just the centers for the caps and figured i would try to get the old ones out without destroying the cap.

i took a 1/8 or .1285 drill bit and drilled a hole thru the back of the cap.

**STOP AT THE CLEAR / COLORED PART, DO NOT DRILL ALL THE WAY THRU**

i would NOT drill through the center as that is the main rib for the center cap and drilling it may cause it to crack. i dilled 2 holes befor i figured out you only need one. i then used a 1/8 punch and pushed the yellow center horsie out.

the old ones will click right back in, and wont come out without the punch, so glue may not be needed. beware, glue on the backside of the horse will most likey"bleed" into the image and be visible up close.

the glue idea is for if the little buggers wont stay in place.


its fun to do small things like this yourself, and save a few $$$ .

where'd ya get the inserts, and how much?

 

GT CAR PARTS , Ricambi, ects ell them for around $5.00 each. better than buying the caps for $25 + each !

ya know, i never thought of it that way!


frosted, cracked and damaged wheel horsies are a pet peave of mine. coming up with this idea seemed like a great way to do it yourself, have some fun, and save a few dollars (pounds!) !

Excellent stuff, Reaper... Makes me want to buy 4 or 5 centers to stick in a drawer for down the road when they're NLA, or only available as complete center + cap units for $150ea.!

Nice job on the reuse of the cap! I wrote Ricambi and they say they don't carry the emblems anymore. I not familiar with GT CAR PARTS, and couldn't find them online. Can you help with some more info on them?

Thank you for the great tip on replacing the wheel centers. We need more do it yourself repair reports.

Remove the cnter cap from the wheel.
Place a folded cloth on working surface (kitchen table)
put a dab of rubing compound on the cloth in the center
place the center cap face down in the compound
While applying moderate preasure, move the cap in a figure 8 pattern for about 5 minutes, repeat until the haze is clear
Then with a clean cloth repeat the above with polishing compound.
With a clean cloth remove the polishing compound.
They will be just about as good as new.
Thie combined with the replacement will further cut costs.
Tip: If you mix new and polished centers put 'like' on the same side.
