I just noticed that when I use the factory iPod adapter in my 09 430 with the Apple brand 30 pin to lightening adapter my phone doesn’t charge. Music and navigation sound come though fine, but it’s not charging.

Anyone else have this problem or had this problem and solved it? And no, replacing the factory radio is not an option. I want to keep the car as stock as possible.

    Thanks,
    Cheers,
    Corey

Unfortunately your cable, as mine in the 08, doesn’t charge the phone.

Something just occurred to me. in 2008ish time frame Apple products stopped supported 12V and only supported 5V charging only. I have some old iPods from before and after. If the 12V ones charge, I think they make an adapter to covert 12v devices to support charging 5v. I used to have one in my GT3.

I was right. I plugged an old 12v compatible touch-wheel iPod in the OEM 30 pin cable and it charged. So I dug up my old 12v to 5v 30 pin adapter from my GT3. Plugged it into the OEM Ferrari iPod cable and then plugged my 30 pin to lightening adapter and I can charge my iPhone XS Max.

The adapter I used was an old Scosche version similar to this...

The only weird thing I noticed is that it is giving power even with the car off. Hopefully the adapter doesn't vampire drain much power or the radio has a time delay and then kills the power. If the adapter uses an off the shelf 5v regulator and it doesn't kill the power, it shouldn't suck more than a few mA without a load. I'll keep an eye on this, though the car does sit on the maintainer most of the time anyway.

This 12v only thing may also explain why my 30 pin bluetooth music adapter doesn't work, it may have been looking for the 5V. I'll have to try it again, right now I have it hooked up to an old iPod dock in my pool house, so I'll try over the weekend.

    Cheers,
    Corey
