The Four Safe Wheels Foundation is a non-profit public benefit organization, which offers a defensive driving school program to teenage drivers and local schools. The program's goal is to teach young drivers safe and defensive driving skills using simulated road conditions and also basic automotive maintenance skills to minimize the possibility of danger. The program will partner with law enforcement communities and local businesses to teach these life-saving skills to young drivers.

Each year, over 6,000 teenagers die in automobile accidents in the U.S. alone - more than double the number of people we lost in the September 11th terrorist attack. Those statistics are even more outrageous when we compare the figure with the number of American lives lost in the Vietnam War. During the 10 years of the American involvement in the Vietnam War, we lost about 56,000 soldiers; an average of 5,600 lives per year - tragic and heartbreaking, yet less than the number of teens we lose in car accidents every year. We lose more people - teenagers - on the streets in the U.S. then the battlefields of a major war. Also, when we include the number of teenagers who become handicapped from automobile accidents, the number soars to over 100,000 teenagers per year.

In 2001, there were 5,934 persons killed in accidents involving young drivers, age 16-20. Many of these accidents and crashes could have easily been avoided if teens were given the proper training and knowledge to handle varying traffic conditions and the many dangerous situations that a young driver is likely to face on today’s roads. The typical driver’s training course does not cover these things, and often doesn’t even cover some of the most basic skills such as simple automotive maintenance. Yet, the young drivers continue to get their licenses and take their lives as well as the lives of others into their inexperienced hands.

The Four Safe Wheels Foundation was founded with the intent of creating a program to teach these young drivers how to handle not only the different driving conditions inherent to their area of residence, but also basic defensive driving technique. With these skills, the young driver will hopefully become more aware of just how dangerous driving can be and will have a greater respect for the road and other drivers. Along with that, the program will also teach young drivers how to maintain their cars so as to avoid situations that could place them in a great deal of danger. Even simple things such as checking the oil during a fill-up at a gas station or checking the tire pressure levels could save lives.

The foundation believes that by offering a defensive driving skill program to teen drivers and schools, there is a chance this number can be brought down tremendously. If the program can save even one life by offering these necessary skills, it will be worth it.
