My wife and I recently closed a Chase credit card account because the interest rate skyrocketed and they never informed us of the increase (they claim that they did send out something in the mail, which they probably disguised as junk mail that gets put through the shredder).

Anyways, we received a statement this month (like I said, we CLOSED the account, yet still got a statement!). The only charge listed on there is for some credit monitoring service, which we NEVER ordered. I called this service, and they informed me that we have been paying for this service since Nov/2004! Shame on me for not closely inspecting our statements. Nevertheless, we never ordered this service. They asked me for a code that was listed on the statement next to their name. This code told them that Chase was the source of this monitoring service having been activated.

Anyone else experience something like this? Does anyone know of any recourse that can be taken?

    They are freaking crooks!

Hate to say this but all they need to start this monitoring is a verbal agreement. Your wife may have agreed over the phone. They usually offer 3 months free "cancel anytime" but then you get charged everymonth thereafter. I cant remember ever talking to any CC company that didnt try to sell me on this. Like I said, only verbal agreement needed.

Do you think that they would have recorded this conversation?

I doubt it, unless it was picked up by the "random" recordings they do. Most companies do rely on transcripts that employees fill out following these conversations. You could ask for some proof of an agreement (verbal or otherwise). At that point they may look at any contact history they have with you. If they cant produce anything, you may have a shot at getting your $ back.

Did you ever sign up for freecreditreport.com? They automatically sign you up for some service. I had to dispute the charge through chase and then call up the company who did the service and cancel it. I got rather mad, they make it very hard for you to cancel. However, when you call, mention the words credit card and dispute and they'll process it right away. Hope that helps

Who would I go after..............Chase or the monitoring company?

Also, since I have been charged since Nov/04, I wonder if there is some kind of deadline to claim a refund.

I would go after both. Twice the odds that you get some sort of reimbursement. I'd demand that each of them show you proof that you authorized this service on your account.

The biggest obstacle you're going to face is the fact that you've been paying for this service since '04 and just now realized it. Does this "service" offer any benefits that subscribers would normally use? Showing that you have never used anything relating to this service might help you prove that you had no idea it was in effect.

Good luck to you. My guess is that it will take a lot of complaining and time to have any shot at getting some of your money back.

OMG, I did a blog post on this a few days ago. Reprinted for you:

    Bank Blues
    Current mood: aggravated

Last month Chase charged me $29 on my credit card for a "rewards program" that I never even signed up for. I called them and after a solid 5 minutes of wading through a million options, I got to the "charge you're disputing" option. I pressed the key and got a recording to call the vendor and request they take it off...I thought I was doing that! In disgust I hit 'O' and got back on hold. I finally got an operator and explained the situation. They apologized and said they'd take off the charge.

Well, this month not only do I owe $29, but now it's got an additional dollar for a finance charge! I called, again, wondering if this is SOP for them and contemplating a class action suit or something. Again I waded through the myriad of options and got a human voice. They saw where the request to take me off the program was made, but there was no request to not pay the $29!! Huh???? Why would I want to pay for a service I don't want?? They couldn't answer that but said they'd delete the $29 charge. This time I was smart, and asked about the $1 finance charge. "Oh sir, I can't delete that; you'll have to talk to my supervisor." Huh??? For a buck??

Another bout on hold and the supervisor came on line. He was happy to remove the dollar and wished me a nice day. I tell you, these guys give government Beurocracies a run for their money!

This happened to me when I was off at the War for 2005. This is how I got all my money back….

It was actually pretty easy to get this stuff taken care of, just took a little time is all. The first thing you do is call the service and tell them you never authorized them to bill you and to cut it out. That is all you need to say and all you should say unless they promise to refund your whole balance. Follow this up with a letter to them saying the same.

Next call the CC company and say you suck at accounting but that you never authorized this and you dispute the charge. Not just one month, but all of them. Tell them that if they can send you a signed item where you in fact DID authorize them then you will look at it further. Follow this up with a letter as well.

On the back of your bill it should have printed how to best dispute the charge. Just remember that they can do nothing at all until they get it from you in written form. And send all those letters certified mail.

    Good luck!!!

Thanks very much for that offer but I really don't want to impose on anyone. I know I am in for some long, aggravating phone calls with plenty of runaround.........I just have to decide if it's worth all of the time I know it's going to take.

    Dan,

Couple of questions for you. Do you do your banking at Chase? If you do this should be a non issue. Just call up the manager at the branch that you do business with and discuss the situation with him/her. If you are a good customer with direct deposit and/or keep your balances up it should end there. Since the merger with Bank-one (loved NBD but hated Bank-one) I have been VERY satisfied with Chase waiving fees and bumping my interest in my savings and checking accounts.

If you are not a customer of Chase, call the CC division and immediately ask to speak to a supervisor. Let them know about the situation and refrain from using words that get **ed out here, remember you need this person to help you out. Once you have explained the situation to them ask for a refund on all of the charges since 2004. They will probably tell you that there was costs involved with this credit insurance, blah, blah, blah and offer you a compromise. Stick to your guns and deny that you authorized these charges and they will cave. It has ALWAYS been this easy for me.

I just had a similar situation with Verizon Wireless and their V-cast service. Seems that they put it on my account as a free 30 day trial when I got a new phone in December and I paid for the service from January-August. I called and talked to a customer service rep and had them cancel the V-cast service, then asked to get a refund. That rep told me that she didn't have the authority. I asked her to connect me to someone who did, I re-explained the situation and was immediately given a refund (as credit on my next bill) for the $15 a month that the service cost. By the way they emailed me the signed documents that I authorized these charges (small print on the receipt for the new phone)...they still refunded my money.

Was the fee a set dollar ammount? Or was it like 30 cents per $100 balance on the account. If it is the later the bleeding may not be that bad if you didn't carry large balances on this account for the past 2 years.

Good luck and you should probably be in a comfortable chair when you make the initial call.

I say pursue chase since they were the initiators of the transaction with you. Try to exhaust your options with them first. Dr S sounds like he has the best method, IMO.

Don't do any banking with Chase aside from that credit card.

The monthly charge was something like $13, so from Nov/04, I am looking at about $285.

The thing that bothers me the most is that we closed the account, yet here we receive another statement with this lone charge on it.

Not for nothing, but to have a service since 2004 and not realize till August 2006, thats a solid case for them to not re-imburse you.

Only thing you could do is contact Chase. Tell them you never authorized that service. If you did, then you need to see a copy of the authorization which was signed by you or your wife if she is listed on the account. If they cant produce it, I would tally what is still owed on the account (if anything) and tell them you will be deducting that.

Its going to be a nightmare, but persistance usually pays off. Welcome to the new world, post-October 17, 2005 where banks can do whatever the frick they want.

I've had great experiences with Chase banking, but the credit card divisions usually run independently.

    Thats CRAZY!
I got the $29 fee from Chase as well!
I had the card for 2 years and spent around 50k on it. The only reason I got it at the time was the FREE rewards program. So I called them and told them that I would cancel the card if they didnt remove it immediately. So they did and apologized. Then I called and removed it from my GF's Chase card as well. What a bunch of crap. Can you imagine how many people fell for this crock of crap?
