    Hi Guys,

I currently have the engine, gearbox and fuel tanks out of my '81 308 GTSi and I will be repainting the chassis and silver bulkheads whilst I have access. Does anyone have any recommendations on what to use? I'm in the UK, so was thinking Hammerite gloss black for the chassis and silver for the bulkheads (front and back)??? Any better recommendations?
I also need to plaint the deck lid shut spaces (either side of the engine where the VIN number is stamped). Should this be matt or gloss? Any recommendations also???

    Thank you in advance.

    Cheers,

    Tom

I used POR-15 on my chassis when I renewed all my suspension parts in 2013. It’s an moisture cure urethane paint so way more hard wearing than Hammerite. However, if it will be subject to UV, it needs another protective layer on top.

Epoxy is also an option for repainting chassis

The paint finish for the deck lid spaces are a kind of eggshell finish in my car. A little shiny but not gloss.

    Hi Dflett,

Thank you for your feedback and insights, really helpful. I hadn't heard of POR15 before, not sure its easy to get here in the UK, but I have found a source so will look into that!!!

Im probably over thinking it, but whilst its all stripped I wanted to make it look pretty :)....

    Thanks again.

Also used por15 black. I used the "Semi-Gloss" which is actually what I would consider gloss, on the chassis.

For the top parts where the VIN is stamped it would be too glossy. I didn't repaint that part on mine... didn't really need it.

My restorer uses POR-15 as well.

    Hi Guys,
Thank you for all your help and advice, as always :).
I went with POR-15 in the end and pretty happy with the results. Still lots more to do before the engine goes back in and as always, as you go through such projects you find a load of other ‘whilst your there’ jobs that also need doing, but very happy with the results.
I pulled all the fuel system and repainted it along with the bulkheads. I still need to do the black bits on the deck, and replace some rusty hardware, but think i am nearly breaking the back of it now.
Here are some before and after shots…

    Cheers,

    Tom

Thanks dflett. I actually feel like I am starting to make progress now on the build…

There was quite a lot of rot on the panel under the trunk, I have had to ‘bodge’, it a bit for the moment as I dont have the funds to have it all cut out and re-welded, but my ‘repair’, should hopefully suffice for the moment until I can tackle the rot in the sills and a rear body support…

Lots more to do, but this is my forever car so I don’t mind the journey…

    Cheers,

    Tom

I would not use POR-15, or any paint product, on the chassis frame/tubes if you want to look original. Ferrari hit all those parts with Dinitrol 4942 undercoating, which has a dark bronzy color. That product cannot be imported into the US anymore, but is available in Europe and is not expensive. The closest match I found in the US is Fertan UBS240 undercoating. I applied some of that to my lower frame after replacing some parts of the fuel system (draining the gasoline stripped off the Dinitrol). Once dried, the Fertan darkened and was a very good match.
