    Hi my 308 Gtb uk car has a chassis number on a traffolite label on the inside of the A pillar, the car was in the US a while. Is this something required by US law? I am assuming this isn't factory

    Few days ago, I saw similar plate on US 328.

    I 've got this answer by "Rifledriver"

    "A federal reg started sometime in that time frame requiring all major components be identified as a way of controlling theft for parting cars out."

    May it's same case....

    That was an answer to a little different question.

    Gray market cars imported to the USA needed a visible VIN. Many of the conversion shops did not know the VIN on the steering column complied with the law so they put an additional number on a plate in the windshield.
