I need a little advice here. My son who is 15 has been a Pokemon tounament player for a long time (since he was 8), He is nationally ranked fairly high and takes his tournaments seriously since they could produce a college scholarship for him. Yesterday my wife took him 275 miles to Houston to play in the 10th Anniversary Journey Across America event at the Galleria. Only 64 qualifiers are allowed to play at each site in each age bracket as this tour makes its way across America. If you win at the tour event, you win a trip for two to New York City to compete in the National championships, with the top two there winning a week long trip for four to Japan to compete in the World Championships. OUr son finished 2nd in the top bracket. Before competing they have to sign a rules statement that "no electronic game altering devices can be used". Today we found out that the young man who won the event did indeed use a gameshark to give all his combatants perfect powers and defenses. It is being discussed on several different forums right now including, www.gamefaqs.com and www.smogon.com. In fact, the person who won is a moderator on smogon and actually bragged about the fact that he did use the gameshark to win. Now the question. Should we contact NIntendo with the information we have about this person violating the rules to win the event and win the trip to compete at the National Championships or just let it ride and hope that someone at Nintendo finds this out on their own? Having signed the agreement aboout the rules and grounds for disqualification, I certainly believe that the young man who won should be disqualified. He stopped the person he faced in each round the possibility of going further by cheating. What do you guys think? Our son is competing this Saturday at the Parks Mall in Arlington at the other Texas stop for this tour and stands a chance to win there. Should he just hope to do well in Arlington or should he claim foul and attempt to get the other person disqualified????
The TOS was broken. Make Nintendo aware of the situation, and let them deal with it. It's their problem, not yours. Sit it out, and wait for the result. Wow, i didnt realise how huge that is over there, or in Japan for that matter. Good luck to your Son.
Yea your right Mike, I'm going to HK soon can't wait. Audiguy, It would be right for your son to win 1st place since he did not cheat hopefully he gets 1st because he worked so hard. Do you have a link to where the guy says he used gameshark? I dont see it.
dam, i was good at Galaga and Silkworm, perhaps i should have taken it seriously...? yeah i'm not american i don't understand scholarships etc. just hear them talk about them on dawsons creek and stuff.
I printed a copy of it when we found it. It has since been deleted. I understand he is a mod on smogon and good friends with mod on gamefaqs. The name he goes by on gamefaqs is Roy Master........ You might be able to find all his posts.

There is no question here - take this up with the organisers, this guy is just asking for it by cheating then *boasting* like a f***tard about it.
Yea, blow the whistle. You've got the perfect excuse with the info in hand. Make it sound like someone else brought it to Nintendo's attention. They may not be able to do anything about the past but may be able to catch the guy next time. Good luck with it.
I'm taking the alternate view here. No offense, but I would let this be a life lesson for your son and go about your business. I would tell him to get used to it, because that's the way the world is. People cheat day in and day out and being honest isn't enough to get ahead in life. I'd also tell him that all the cheating will eventually catch up with his opponent. Make sure to point out that this usually happens only after he's won everything there is to win and has funneled the proceeds to homesteaded real estate in Florida where it can't be touched by angry shareholders. That should get the point across. RMX
Remix An alternative life lesson can be given to the clown who cheated immediately. By Audiguy getting involved in the situation now(which I think he should without a doubt), this clown will have to be held responsible for his actions. By sitting idle it might teach others that cheating IS an acceptable way to get ahead and that you won't get caught. Even if the guy is busted later, this still robs Audiguy's son of the opportunity. This guy needs to eat it, especially for having such a big mouth and bragging about it.
Definitely turn him in. Not everybody cheats and steals, and saying that they do is just an excuse that unscrupulous people use to cheat and steal. It's just sad that so many people adhere to the dictum of "if you don't get caught you didn't do anything wrong." How these people look themselves in the mirror every morning is just proof that man is a rationalising animal. Even if nothing comes of turning him in, you still did the right thing. After that it's up to the authorities.
I think you should only grin and bear it, as Remix suggests, if the power to change the situation is beyond you. If you lost because he cheated, bust him.
You may have failed to see the humor. That's likely because I'm only half-kidding, I suppose. I see it every day; people cheating their way through life in one form or another. From corporate guys stealing millions to people who cut in line at the store, their behavior is all rooted in the same place. Most are all about themselves and I'm certain it's unlikely to change. This kid will eventually get caught, I wouldn't worry about it. RMX
Sounds like your son has worked very hard and gained some real-life experiences. Now you should give him another one and show him what happens when people cheat. Cheating was not such a big thing when I was in jr high and high school, but when I went into college it was handled much differently.
Can you make an "anonymous" tip to Nintendo? That way it doesn't appear like a conflict of interest for you. I'd turn him in.....but the battle might be more than you want, especially if this kid has some clout with those who make decisions.
Go for it James, and teach your kid a life lesson Because this is what will happen: 1) You'll be accused of falsifying evidence 2) The case will be dropped for lack of evidence 3) Word will get out that your kid was involved in the accusation 4) He'll become an outcast in that society 5) The cheater will prevail without punishment 6) A certain percentage will hail the cheater for being 'smart enough to get away with it' So, all in all it's just like the real world and corporate politics. Ask any whistleblower.
That is very likely exactly what will happen. And if you ask me it's more reason than ever to turn the cheater in. Principles are worth standing up for. I think I should say that again: Principles are worth standing up for.
