my check engine light has been coming on while driving lately. when it does, and i try to give it a lot of gas, it will rev, then hesitate, then shoot up again. The light goes on and off along with the hesitations. any ideas?

Check your ECU codes and tell us what it reads. Without those it is a guessing game.

Check out No Doubt's technical resource. It gives clear instructions - and if I could figure it out, anybody can, lol!

They are behind the seats, mounted on the firewall. You have a spider? If so, there should be one large panel to remove behind your seats on the firewall. Underneath the panel you will see both ECU's. Locate the red button (or in some cases a black button) - one for each ECU - and proceed with the instructions to pull your codes.
