Hey guys, I have a 1995 355. I was driving the other day and the check engine light 5–8 came on briefly and then went off. It’s done that once or twice in the last day or so. It will come on, and then go off and then I don’t see it again for the rest of the day. Any ideas what this could be? Thanks so much.

Frank, it could be a variety of intermittent failures such as O2 sensors. Unfortunately, with OBDI, you don't have pending codes. Best thing to is check the code right when it goes on next. See attached.

My recommendation is whenever you see those pesky lights, hammer down on the gas and drive it harder for about 10 minutes. It will go away.

Does it come on at idle or at RPM? I can almost guarantee it will be a 1211 or 1212 code. Try cleaning the MAF for the 5-8 side. Check for vacuum leaks. Clean contacts for MAF. If you still have the problem, try replacing the 5-8 O2 sensor. Rockauto has OEM Bosch units fairly cheap, $70, BOSCH 13309.

You can pull the code right? To see what is triggering it?

    Cheers

If it is a 1211 or 1212, and cleaning it or adjusting the resistance doesn't fix it, let me know had both MAFs refurbished for this exact problem. Also make sure you check O2 sensors, easy cheap fix for that.

    Cheers

You can always swap MAFs too and see if the light switches, then you know for sure it's the MAF.

355 MAF doesn't have adjustable resistance.

    Hi johnk,

I apologize or my mistake, I assumed the 2.7 Motronic ones had the adjustable plug. Appreciate the correction.

For reference, the 2.7 MAF is the same as a 1993 SAAB Turbo. Bosch no longer make new one but they remanufacture them. See below. Posted this before, but doesn't hurt to post it again.

Check engine 5-8 or slow down 5-8?

Just check the code. I had one on 5-8 on and off on my 95. Checked the code and it was a temp sensor. Why guess?

That's funny Mitchell because in all seriousness I was going to post the same thing.
Notmjust hammer down though, slow down to 20 then hammer down up to 8 grand through first 4 gears if possible.
