I just purchased a 1998 355 F1 Spider. Engine out service done by Lance Hedrick first of December. The car is gorgeous! Question, it appears my 'check engine' light doesn't come on when turning the key. What is the check engine light symbol and where is it located?
It looks like it may be an 'engine symbol', orange, located at the bottom of the dash? Any thoughts on why it doesn't come on? The only orange indicator that comes on and goes off is a little car symbol with hood up and says 'auto'.....thanks for any help

Someone may have purposely removed the light bulb. Instant Fail on a Cali smog check.

Hook up your OBDII scanner and see if your throwing a CEL.

If you read the OBD2 code, you will see if there is a code for missing CEL light. I bet you have some codes ...

Thanks, I had it at my mechanic yesterday and the OBD2 code reader had a bunch of codes!
He cleared them and said to drive it a bit and bring it back on Monday.
I'll be back to him on Monday and check for the CEL code for missing light.
Same here in Texas, instant fail if the 'check engine' light doesn't come on and go off...and I can't get license tags and the car registered without this inspection.

The F1 car should look like this:

Newbies often get caught out by the "hood open" symbol. It's actually a "gear selector on console" ;)

someone definitely removed the bulb - easy fix, but of course you will have to cure the main issue which is why does it come on..you should buy a wifi OBD reader and hook it up so you know what faults you have

Congrats on your new baby ! If you start to throw codes even “pending” and the bulb was removed, then safe to assume someone was chasing a gremlin.

The pain point comes when you reset the OBDII and throw codes before the system is ready for testing. Compounded with the fact that a drive cycle can take hundreds of miles.

Well I am just sharing info as a previously Licensed California Smog Technician.

Keep us posted and I am sure you will work through it.

A proper drive cycle takes 30-45 minutes.

Only 2 non-continues monitors max, to be in a Not Ready state to pass the test.

Getting the car ready to test without throwing a code ( on a car that already throws codes ) not such an easy task.

If a Tech feels it’s a lucrative endeavor, more power to them. We need more of them.

I’m in Texas, don’t think I can get a temporary inspection, ....I have at least one ‘resource’ to get that inspection without having it inspected, if you get my drift ;)

Hey guys, next question....the soft top has been converted from automatic to manual operation.
Have put the top down a couple of times, windows would go up and down....now, with the top down, neither the passenger or driver windows will operate.
Can anyone suggest what I need to do to get the power windows to operate?

The power seats work, but, the power windows don't. From looking, if that switch was still plugged in, wouldn't the power seats not work also?

Then disconnect it ;) This will simulate the roof being fully down and should reactivate the windows.

(EDIT): This switch only inputs into the window ECU.

There are inputs into the Roof ECU from the switches in the primary rams which may reactivate the seats.
