The check engine light came on today . The gas cap is aways tight , checked all emisson hoses. Is there a way to reset the light without going to the dealer ?

The friggin O2 sensors on these cars are a POS. To reset you have to go to the dealer.

Another option is a small strip of black masking tape. I'm not kidding. A Ferrari service manager told me this once.

Actually you do not need to go to the dealer to reset the CEL. All you need to do is reset the thing with an OBD. The real concern is what triggered it. If you reset it you lose the stored fault. It could be something as simple as a one time misfire, or it could be a blown intake gasket. You wanna role that dice? Ask me how I know.

If it's OBDII, is there any reason an OBDII scanner wouldn't be able to scan for the code, tell you whether it was something major or not, and clear the code?

an obd will read random misfire for many things. A Ferrari sd or hands on mechanic will be necessary to actually find the problem. As for that gasket thing I mentioned earlier, you can actually hear it. The generic odb are somewhat useless in getting at the real root of the problem, but you can turn off the CEL light and ignore it if you dare.

This is what I meant when I said that he will have to take the car to a Ferrari dealer (or an independent who has the computer) to clear the code.

Regarding gasket leaks I have never heard of that problem (and certaintly don't have it my car). All I know is that in my case the CEL kept coming on due to the crappy O2 senors that apparently can get trigged by too much morning dew. Moreover, the service manager was the one who gave me the black tape trick. (My CEL has not come on in some time, so maybe replacing them did the trick. Who knows?)

Those gasket leaks are a problem that more and more people are seeing these days on the 5 series. Another gentleman on this board clued me into what to look for when I posted a CEL problem back last fall. Techs confirm it is a design flaw. The process of replacing them is not too complicated, nor expensive. The result of ignoring it can be.

I had the same problem, albeit on my Dodge. Check engine light came on while on the dyno at the smog test station. Needless to say, it failed. Good news was that it diagnosed my problem. Misfire on Cyl.5. Checked the Internet and found a thread that said that the intake gasket was probably the cause. Another symptom is pinging under load. I thought I had been buying cheap gas. Bought a new gasket set and problem solved.

BINGO..........that is what i meant when I say you can hear it. Depending on the size of the leak, you can hear a hiss from the manifold. Good catch, hope you are on your way soon

Twice in the past couple of weeks, this engine code P0410 has appeared when the Check Engine Light goes on.

    P0410- Secondary Air Injection System.

Has anyone seen this code on their 550 and/or how to deal with it? I used my OBD2 scanner to clear the code out.
