I'm no expert - but I'm sure it was done by hand, for starters! That's art, no matter how you slice it.
It's fine hand engraving done by a custom gunsmith on a Merkel action. It had Cape Buffalo horn trigger guard, butt plate and pistol grip cap and the finest set trigger for the rifle I have ever shot. The shotgun was 2 1/2 inch 16 ga.The workmanship was remarkable and is typical of the fine custom makers in Suhl pre war. Slow night, i thought some of you might enjoy seeing it, if not check out the bikini thread.
i have been a hand engraver - knife maker - custom gun builder for 40 years - i enjoy it - some folks could care less & don't look at it as an art form - tommy http://www.picturetrail.com/tomhudson
If I were shot with a rifle, I would want it to be a beautifully crafted work such as that one. BTW, if you ever go to DFW, check out the Cabela's Outlet near the Speedway. They have they cool 'library' of vintage firearms that go to $20-30k.
2 1/2. Hard to find. Many of these old guns were re-bored for 2 3/4 shells, but this one was not. I bought some Swedish 2 1/2s although I can't recall the name of the company any more.
If you appreciate unusual Shotguns, you might like this. It's an 1898 Laine of Paris Pyramidial 3 Damascus barrelled 2 trigger 16 guage with a Lefaucheux under-lever opener . I sold this gun last year at Bonhams London auction. I also have an exceptional matched pair of 1950's Stephen Grant 12/20 s/s lightweight game guns, which I'm currently trying to sell if anybody fancies some quality English guns?
