I know on the rear bank (1-4) you can visualy see the cam marks on the camshaft as they line up to a pointer on the fiberglass backing plate for the timing belt cover to get an "aproximate" idea if the cams are in time. Is there any way to check 5-8 without pulling the covers?

My 83 308 has marks on both cam belt rear plates that correspond to marks on the cam toothed pully. I don't know if these are factory or added by someone after the fact. I would think after reading a lot of cam belt replacement threads that they are about as accurate as the marks under the cam covers, which I have read are not all that dead on. The thought is once you have verified the the timing for sure with the covers off you can then put truly accurate marks on the exterior and do belt replacements with the covers in place. The thing is to be sure your content with the current timing.

With the thought of replacing belts every three years I have no intention of removing cam covers every time.
