It's been a few years since I cruised on the Cherohala Skyway, but I must say, for me it's still one of the best roads to drive your car on in Western NC.

I just came back from a drive on it. The weather was perfect and by far, it was the highlight of all the roads in the area. The lack of traffic and incredible views and scenery are quite a contrast to the Tail of the Dragon.

Of course we also cruised the Tail of the Dragon. After all, 129 is a one-of-a-kind road and not to be missed. It was however a good reminder of why I prefer not to ride it during the weekend. The traffic was typically bad and that includes a few motorcyclists who tend to experiment with their skills a bit too much by leaning into your lane on a tight curve or two. I've ridden my motorcycle on that road more time than the sports car and I've seen a few nasty situations that remind me to be weary of the oncoming traffic in the curves.

Regardless of the traffic, TOD is also a great road to ride even if you do it on a weekend (but with great caution).

If you like an 'open road' experience on a beautiful ride through the mountains, you should put the Cherohala Skyway on your must-do list.

Great road. You can tell it's more modern than The Blueridge Parkway, perfect banking etc.

The 45 MPH speed limit is very frustrating considering the quality of road.

It should be one of those bucket list things for everyone who drives a sports car or rides a motorcycle.

It is indeed a great road. These posts led me to learn a new word today

    portmanteau

based on how the Cherohala name came to be as a combination of Cherokee and Nantahala. I led a motorcycle ride on it in the 90's not long after it opened. Despite the many well planned curves it claims lives each year on one or two curves that tend to surprise. Enjoy but stay aware.

honestly, i prefer this road to the dragon. the dragon is technical but such a workout to get from one end to the other. the skyway has many more long sweeping, higher speed corners that i get more enjoyment out of. i kinda prefer 28 (hellbender) to the dragon as well but i still like driving the dragon from time to time too :)
