So, on the same topic as me moving to the Windy City, anyone on here familiar with the General Aviation scene in the area? I'm a CFI-I/MEI and am going to be interested in doing some instructing/flying on the side up there. I know of a few local airports, but anyone on here a pilot or know about the area?

Your best chance is probably with Palwaukee community airport. Nice place and mostly for business jets and private pilots.

There are other places all around Chicagoland, but this one strikes me as the "closest to the city" and still one primarily for small planes.

    Brad,

Not a pilot... but perhaps you should check the happenings at Palwaukee Airport in Wheeling. Most Chicago corporates fly out of there today, and they just revamped some of their runways. They have three schools there last time I checked... Given that you are looking in the north part of the city to live, Im thinking this would be your best bet as it would be just a quick drive up the Edens or 294 given the proper time. The only alternative I could think of would be Gary/Chicago airport. Not at all familiar with this airport apart from the fact that during the massive Chicago Air and Water Show, the other hub and landing point for the military jets is this pad. Midway used to have quite a collection of private but this is going back into my kid memories in the 80s. Today all I know about it is that the AON corp flies its fleet of jets out of there amongst some other city corps. If you're just a simply prop guy having fun, I say Palwaukee and if you want to drive, maybe check out Schaumburg. Lake in the Hills is just too far for a city person I would assume.

Lewis University in Romeoville has its own airfield and school as well. I'd imagine you should be able to get to that one by bus without a problem.

If you want PM me. My lady is a pilot and has over 10 years in the pilot seat. She's looking into a six seater bonanza. She got me my first lesson and I just signed up to go for my pilot's license. So let me know what you are looking for and we could probably help you out.

I used to live in Glenview and fly out of Palwaukee quite a bit. Then found a flying club in Waukegan called stick and rudder. Have a good selection of planes, 150s, 172s, 182s and twins at good prices. If your living on the North shore I felt it was worth the drive - its quite a ways from the city proper, however.

Dave, is correct with the Stick and Rudder club. They currently have nine planes in the club. I just joined them this past Saturday. Good group of people. Very reasonable club dues and other expenses.

There is also the Dupage County Airport out in West Chicago. I beleive that Tod - Tod328gts here on the board uses that one. And there's another one in Schaumburg.

Also, there are a couple of "Aviation Subdivisions" out here. One over by Downers Grove or Lisle. They have their House, garage, and attached hangars. A Runway along the front. Pretty cool!
