I posted this in P&R, mods can delete it from here if they want: I read the Chicago Tribune website to get local news. At the end of most stories there is a section for readers to comment at the bottom. If I comment something liberal or just "fluffy" then my comment is approved, If my comment leans conservative (not inflammatory or anything vulgar, obvious rejects) it never gets approved by the censor. for instance; today there is an article about muggings (there have been a rash of muggings here) and no description of the muggers genetic appearance is given. So I posted a comment asking why a description was not given. It was not approved. come to your own conclusions, but this happens all the time on this website. again, I'm not speaking about crazy remarks, causing riots, making posts about race or anything...I think that a description of an attacker is germane to the story....not a sly way of making a racial commentary.
You just need a map like this http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?hl=en&ie=UTF8&msa=0&msid=104675750739697697598.00044e3957099c263f47c&ll=41.79384,-87.61734&spn=0.457659,0.933838&z=10 too bad it is 2008.
The Trib has a long history of being a very conservative (anti union, pro business, etc...) paper that often specifically directs staff writers to put a conservative spin on stories. I would tend to think your comment being rejected had more to do with: a) potential agreement with the authorities concerning an ongoing investigation(which they have been known to do) b) wording that may have tripped one of their filters I understand your point about valid comments being squashed; however, with the Trib I highly doubt it is part of a liberal conspiracy.
I disagree. Look at how the Trib reported the news last fall around the election. Look how it sensationalizes news stories slanted toward the racial issues of.......well you know where I was going with this. The Trib sank to new lows and is now nothing but a poor excuse for a rag (IMHO). I simply cannot trust that the Trib will report a story without their hidden agenda built in. The only time I buy the Trib is when I need paper to line the bottom of my bird cage.
I am always disappointed when some magazine doesn't print my letter. I rarely write one, but when I do it is normally for a real reason and I put my best effort into my rationale trying not to just express an opinion. And they never get printed. Last one I wrote was to Forza about the politics of Ecclestone and his Macchiavellian approach to track selection. I thought it was well written, but it never got printed. I don't chalk it up to censorship but rather editors who don't get it. Oh well, such is life.
I agree with your comment about the salacious side of the Trib (and most other media outlets for that matter). Sadly, I think that is more of a comment on what their audience wants than what the editorial board wants. I also agree that in the past election the Trib was more than a little biased in its endorsement of roughly two-thirds of the Democratic candidates; however, my point was about their editing choices overall and which reader responses they publish.
I believe that how a person or organization does one thing, they will do all things that way. So, once the Trib skewed the reporting for a story (any story) and the editors let it slide, what other stories or editorials are treated with the same lack of attention to detail and truth. While you may think they are conservative, make no mistake, they are not in any way shape or form. IMO they have shown that their reporting cannot be trusted, so how can anyone believe ANY story or editorial printed by them? They have simply reinvented themselves as the new Enquirer. The Trib has, at best, only entertainment value and absorbency for my bird cage.
The Homer Herald (Homer Glenn) is another publication that censors anything and everything that doesn't agree to a T with the editors... I've tried to make several comments on articles with facts and data that refute their illogical and un-researched articles, but never once have they let them show up. Never once have any of my posts been aggressive, sarcastic, full of swears, etc. I even wrote a nice letter directly to the editor inquiring why their policy includes such blatant censorship. It's been 6 weeks with no response. Just for fun I posted a comment that supported some inaccurate statements they had made, and guess what? It got posted!
I witnessed one last night. A couple of younger african-american youths jumped some homeless guy (also african-american) for no appearant reason. I fear if this trend continues not only will there be a rise in racism but also a rise in violence. Pretty soon people behind these attacks are going to run into someone with a gun and it'll be over. Fortunately the two youths had their car right there and had their license plate captured so..good bye to their futures.. Shame really..
Holy smokes! The west side looks to a higher kill ratio than the south side. So glad I live in the burbs
You noticed also that the entire Loop and Gold Coast area is a low crime area? I lived once in the burbs and got almost killed by sheer boredom. If I wanted that kind of life, I could have stayed in never-changing Switzerland.
I used to feel that way, too. But with kids I'm glad to be out of the city. It's amazing how quickly you find yourself on the outside looking in, noticing things like sirens, vomit, beer cans, etc. What's concerning is to see the escalation of crime in areas traditionally considered safe, or at least safer. And as the days grow shorter that will surely continue.
With kids you have to live in the burbs, no argument there. Looking at the map however I don't see much of a crime change. In fact it is what I always thought it was: Don't go South of 55, don't go much west of the Kennedy and don't go much more North than Irving Park. I'd say about 95% of my life is happening within these parameters anyway. I agree that the West and Southside are scary, but they have always been like that. One of the reasons it is like this is that these are the areas with the biggest showing of the police. And these are also the wealthiest areas of the city itself. Image Unavailable, Please Login
Well obviously the big news lately has been the Lakeview/Lincoln Park muggings and beatings, and the Uptown gang problems.
