    Hey all,

98' f355 gts manual owner... had a full cambelt service 800 miles (one month ago) and I've started hearing these chirping /squeaking + ticking sound - usually comes on intermittently whilst idling / low revs in low gears...

Have a look and listen for yourself should I be worried? She seems to drive fine!?
Uploaded a snippet of the sound here, ticking is less obvious.

Sounds like tensioners. Does it happen all the time or when its cold. My 348 does this at cold start then goes away once warmed up

You need to isolate the location...if it is coming from the "pumpkin" down below the muffler, it is your throwout bearing. If it is, replace it with the Hill Engineering product, not the oem one. AND do it before the housing cracks and leaks all the fluid out, and your clutch pedal goes to the floor...been there, done that. ;)

If it from the front of the engine, it could be one of the various belt pullies.

yeah to hard to troubleshoot over the internet until you can gain an idea of where it is coming from.

can you get some video of the noise? or did you park it for now?

Get a 3-4 ft piece of plastic hose, small enough to put in your ear .... Say 3/4 in or so.
Touch it around on different suspect items, you will find the source shortly.
My Indy mech found a blown exhaust gasket in 30 seconds flat, I looked and guessed for over an hour.
Don't put it on moving parts ;) but you should at least eliminate some things.

From the video sounds like a moving part .... bearing of some sort ?

It's there when the car is warm also.

I drove the car 125 miles from Oxford > London and the sound went away (it's goes away on higher revs / gears motorway driving) but resurfaced when I was moving through London traffic.

When I went to record the video is was quite so I gave the accelerator a little push -'d hey presto!

I'm going to try the hose idea or at least try to better locate it tommorow - will record another video to try and pinpoint it better. To my lay ears, it sounds like a belt or a bearing?

Thanks for the help guys... I might also need a recommendation to a London indie (budget in mind ;p )

I reckon it's a belt pulley in front of engine.
    Gotta get that sorted....

Hopefully not a timing belt, pulley, bearing issue
Possibly alternator or water pump or a/c belt

    DK Engineering near Watford
.....not cheap...but does not come any better for knowledge and quality

    Let us know

if it is a bearing, hopefully they can change without taking engine out. During my last cambelt change I had them change all bearings. not OEM but Hill Engineering.

    Well hate to say it

Sounds exactly like the tension bearings and /or the tension actuator bottoming out while cold.
Get it checked out asap if the break your screwed motor time

When was last engine out done?

Also if you had a full cam belt service 800 miles ago ( one month ago) this seems odd.
Was it an engine out service and did they change tensioner/bearings at that time ?
You might want to call them and explain what is going on.

Oh crap service was just done 800 miles ago?

Then the wrong bearing housing is in there
Early housings hit the back with the new bearings. You need late style or massage the old ones to fit with a couple MM clearance.
Also if the waterpump is not rebuilt correctly the vanes hit and make a simular sound but this sounds like the tensioner

Either way engine must come out. Check the WP also while its out. If he made the tensioner mistake then good chance he missed the WP also

    Sorry man

This is a very common thing that happens

There are a few suggestions in the UK section for service but it really does depend on which part of London is your preference

As noted above maybe the first contact is the guys who did the work

Yup was a full engine out service!

I just bought the car from Germany and paid for a major service to be completed via the dealer before I drove the car back to London (didn't notice a squeak when I picked it up).

The car came with a 12 month warranty but now comes the fiddly part of contacting the dealer to make a claim on the warranty whilst getting the work done in the UK.

All fixed I popped up to Mcgurk performance (past Oxford - super helpful btw, beautiful pristine workshop) and en route I realised the sound would go off if I hit the HVAC stop button - ah air conditioning belt of course. They simply tensioned the belt, gave me a handshake and sent me home with a smile!!!

Nice to hear there are still shops willing to expend a little good will to get a new customer. Glad it worked out for you because that video sure had the sound of $$$$ to it.
