Its that time of the year. Looking for gift idea's for my cousin in law and freind, who pretty much always gets me out of jambs with any mechanical issues I get myself into. We all have friends like this. They are "tool guys." I am trying to come up with a cool gift, $150 or so, and its tough as he has pretty much everything. I think most of us guys fall into a similar category.

Last year I got him an LCD scope camera from Home Depot, works ok for light use.

The year before that, one of those Fein Multimaster tools.

This year he already told me he is getting me a Miller Wleding Mask for TIG welding...

So, what can I buy him? I am running out of tools/ideas. Anything new and cool out there?

I am pretty much a tool guy myself and if someone gave me a $150 gift card to someplace like the Snap-on truck or Sears for their Craftsman stuff I would be happy. I could go pick out what I wanted and spend a couple of hours looking at the new stuff. Too much new stuff coming out all the time. My wife just recently bought me a "bone". It is one of those double ended wrenches that has both metric and standard sizes and ratchets. I love it. Saves me a lot of space in one of my smaller carry toolboxes......And it only costs about $40 so you could still have about $100 left over to give him the gift card.......

Maybe a Leatherman tool. On another note, a framed poster of his favorite car to hang in the garage. Get quality print & pro framed. This could be about $200.

Some mechanics are hard to shop for. Years ago when I had my body shop, I helped pay off some Snap-on bills for a couple of employes. One of them almost cried over it.

If he's got a tool truck habit that might be a good one.

If he has a well equipped shop it might be tough to pick something out. If I could see his tools I might have some ideas.

Almost nothing you see advertised on TV appeals to me. Usually some kind of "one size fits all" wrench that in most cases seems more trouble than they're worth.

A favorite of mine that I've given others is a set of "GearWrenches". They are extremely handy but they've been out quite a few years now so he probably has some. They come in a bunch of configurations in SAE and Metric. He probably doesn't have them all.

Its really hard to know what they need or want in that area. I hate doing gift certs because I always blame myself for taking the easy way out but in this case it isn't a bad idea.

We buy our mechanics Snap On gift cards. I would not buy a specific tool.
