The belts indeed were loose, today was the day, I tried using a terrible plastic universal cam lock, it just fell loose and one of the cam wheels moved, gasp* luckily I marked all wheels with a ruler, marked everything I could, cleaned and lubed belt tensioner. Well I didn't want to repeat that so I got myself a real ferrari cam belt lock, it was a few grand but jeez it worked like a charm and it took less than 10 minutes to switch out and lube and re belt the right side. The old bearings felt really dry and chattery

People who are a lot smarter than me did a mod that added petcocks to the front coolant pipes:

Today I'm messing with clutch replacement, pulled gear cover off and was met with loose ring nuts, not just loose but limp wristed on, also the top gear you can move back and forth at least a 1/4 inch without the shaft moving, none of this seems ideal. I can see on the ring nuts the tell tale sign of a screwdriver and hammer used for removal and not for install.

Another thing I found was the replaced heater hose that runs over the clutch housing had a tiny drip drip, pulled it off and found the line had bulged, then rubber swelled and plugged it completely, if it was a human instant heart attack.

Herr Von Barron, this has all the elements of a great thread: cool car, lots of up-close photos, wry humor and an admirable degree of candor. I will watch with interest. Best wishes, John in CT.

Hey man - just wanted to follow up with you on the whole powdercoat thing. Was down at Fowler Automotive here in Pittsburgh (big vintage race shop/general track prep/etc) shop. Dan said he has had good luck just powdercoating mag wheels also. I saw one on the wall as an ornament and asked. He did say that the old mag-chromate process is nasty, but he has seen this hold up fairly well. Didn't talk too much specifically, but thought I would mention it as another data point.

I had a loose ringnut as well. Definitely double checked the torque on the reinstall and peened them as tight into the groove as possible.

My first setback, here's a result of not having the right tool for the job and letting a non qualified cowboy feel up your lady. Clutch shaft gear was not properly torqued and was allowed to wiggle loose and hammer the gear, fellas if your gonna halfass it at least give the hand tightened ring nut a drop of blue loctite. So who want to trade a genuine ferrari gear and shaft (slightly worn) for a aftermarket set

It looks like the top gear of the three? If so, the only little bit of good news is that is the easiest of the two shafts to change. The bottom shaft would be a big project.

Ferr parts in Sac will have what you need.

Well I'm stuck for a bit on the clutch debacle for a bit so decided to go to home depot for ferrari race panels, they had two in stock, $25. My front inner wheel panel (yeah ones missing) was pretty dodgy looking. I rolled a bead in them for full race effect, alums pretty thin .024 so I'll leave it natural until I get better stuff

Wow thanks for looking that up for me, another member has a lead to follow up with. So I have a new dilemma, I took the clutch housing off and I now have drips of antifreeze coming out of a mystery area I can't see, it's just under the snout of the starter motor along the block, I used a slide hammer not to hard to get housing off. If this was a regular v8 I'd say the drip was from a freeze plug in side of the block, used a mirror still can't see. I'll snap a picture in a bit of affected area

You have a whole bunch of hose-to-tube connections at that corner of the engine bay, so the coolant may not be coming from the block at all. Also, do you have a petcock for draining the engine block underneath the rear bank? If not, you'll have a drain petcock in the general vicinity of your drip; these have been known to leak.
