I always thought they were like cigarettes, but the more I like into them, the more I am wrong.

So, cigar aficionados...Are they bad for you?

    Ok---Why?

They are 100% tobacco leaf, hand made.

Cigarettes have tar, plastic, paper, 90% nicotine, etc.

Also, you do not inhale cigars.

The only risk I've read about is oral cancer, but it is only linked with excessive drinking, and at that, it is a "risk".

btw---we are talking about occational use...1-2 per week hobby.

    Thanks for the reply.

I have always heard 10-15 per year won't really do much harm to you. But if you smoke them everyday there is a long list of problems you could have.

Youre inhaling the smoke around you. Im not a medical doctor or the surgeon general, but i have common sense. Common sense tells me when im around cigarette, pipe, cigar or even fireplace smoke, im inhaling crap i shouldnt be.

You ever seen the chimney of a fireplace?? It doesnt get more natural than that, man.

Well of course you breathe it in because the smoke permeates the air, but if you limit them, probably not too bad. My grandfather smoked em constantly and died of old age. I have always liked the aroma. Hold em in your fingers when not puffing and minimize contact with the mouth.

I smoke cigars also. Cigars are better than cigarettes no doubt but the problem is that all smoke contains carcinigens and these can do alot of damage. Its true cigars smokers do not take smoke into the lungs generally but mouth and throat cancer are still high risk factors for us.

Smoking 1/2 a week your probably ok but family history also figures into the equation. Like everything else in life you weigh the risks and rewards and you take your chances. It is a total falsehood though to think as cigars as safe. They are not.

I guess the key like most things in life is moderation. Now where's that Bolivar I put down earlier :)

Besides oral cancer, the nicotine levels in blood are high (absorbed thru the mucosa), so you have your usual concerns of vaso-constriction leading to angina, heart disease, peripheral vascular disease and impotence.

I used to smoke 3/week. Then I met someone without a lower jaw. Now I smoke 1/month. Yes they are bad. Depends on your genetics, and habits, I would guess.

A good family friend "only" smoked a couple cigars per week, and quit 25 years ago. Five years ago he had half of his tongue cut out. A year after that he had more of his mouth removed. A year after that he was dead. If that's not enough, then consider that, other than to the afficionado, cigar-smoking is about the most disgusting, invasive habit you can have. I'd rather sit in a room with 20 cigarette smokers than one cigar lover.

Sure, but you would have to smoke them ALOT. I cant think of many ppl that can stomach a 5 or 6 cigar a day habit, much less afford it. If they are that kind of smoker, they usually smoke cigs instead.

    1) Cigar smoke does contain nicotene, albit in lower levels than cigarettes, AND since cigar smoke is generally not directly inhaled, direct exposure to the nicotene is much less than that of cigarettes. Some nicotene does permiate into the bloodstream through the lips/mouth/tounge.

    2) Carconigens are present, but in signifigantly reduced levels/exposure as above.

    3) Cigar smoke is also generally infrequent (I probally average 1-2 a month tops.)

All the above said, I think I'm in more danger of getting exposed to high levels of carcigens working on my cars myself than an occational cigar.

    Genetics does have influence.

PS: I'm the opposite, I can tollerate (barely, and I always smoke outside myself) cigar smoke, but even a TINY BIT of cigarette smoke makes me want to throw up (literally, nauseua, headache, etc.)
