I heard from someone working for Formula 1 that if you bring your iPad to the race, you can access their wireless network and watch the race from different cameras. Has anyone else heard this? If so is there an article about it or anything?

    That would be cool.

Based on all the other posts complaining about the gouging that's occurring surrounding this event, I don't think I want to know how much this privilege is going to cost.
I'd also hate to bring my ipad to the track... such a device in that crowd is either asking for it to be broken or stolen.

I see a lot of people bringing iPads to events lately (auto shows, etc)... using them as a camera, among other things. Seems like an unwieldy camera but I guess some people like it.

As for the COTA app, I heard there is a mobile app in development, but I don't know if it is the streaming video thing. Doesn't F1 contract with another company that does a competing product:

When you say he works for F1 what do you mean

As hookem posted fanvision runs on a dedicated wireless network at every race track and they charge $$$ for the privilege.

At the moment there are no apps available because of the lag involved using cellular networks over the fanvision network. Fanvision usually has a 1-2sec delay. Using a stream off the net it can be anything from 10-60secs.

They might be creating an app to use their own network but it won't be free  The F1 live timing app is $30 and that's a bit of a joke. :(

    +1 A potential "insider" maybe? ;)

I guessed that's how they must be doing it. Do "we" believe they build the network for each race and then take it down & on to the next?

Anyone know what they charge for the 3 days?

 You said it runs over their own wifi net - Nothing to do with cellular (?)

As for streaming, do you mean data or video? My Sky app streams video at more or less the same time as the live TV feed and my data (split times etc) is pretty much identical to what they're looking at on the 'wall.

I guess the 10-60 seconds you mention is if you get the feed via vipbox or similar? [Which makes sense, given how they're doing it (?)]

Possible I guess, but providing coverage over the entire place isn't cheap for something that'll be used ~6 times a year. Beyond that, does COTA really want to be in the app development business? To do an app solely for COTA? Makes no sense to me......

Now, if the infamous F1PA (the supposed promoters association) got together to do one app for all the races that could make sense.

I beg to differ - It's great on the iPad but I've admittedly moved it onto the iPhone where it's not quite as nice - I only use the ubiquitous timing screen on that as the map etc is, not surprisingly, pretty small...... Again, it's as up to date as the 'wall.

The iPad is now used to watch Sky Go BTW - Awesome choice of cameras, split screens etc etc - *IF* they could duplicate that at the track I reckon they'd have a winner.

    Cheers,
    Ian

    Answered my own question - At least for Austin;

Rent for the 3 days; $68

Or, you can buy it (EU 250, ~$310) includes one weekend subscription. Then $43 / meeting.

They're also advertising "Free Fridays at selected races", but I couldn't see which had been "selected".

So, if you're doing every race, or are HRT who I noticed using them a while back, purchasing makes sense. Beyond that, not so much.......

I also wonder if a wifi network will be available to all-comers or be locked to whatever they come up with? The F1 timing app & indeed Sky Go would then be available without any "new" apps - I'd be willing to pay "something" for access for the weekend.

    Cheers,
    Ian
