    Hi,
I'm new to this forum but I have been involved in racing in the past.

If driving is what you are looking at, the best way to do it is to go start driving. Getting in a well established racing school is one of the proven ways to get your foot in the door. Most of these schools have their own racing series that work on a ladder system; you win the graduation race, then you get a seat in that series, then if you win that one, you move onto other professional series.

I would not worry too much about knowing how the cars work. You can pick up a book and pick it up pretty quickly and easily.

If you can't afford such racing school, you still need to be able to show you are hotshoes behind the wheel. Start racing on the cheap (autocross, karts, etc). I say cheap but no racing is cheap. If you start destroying everyone, then you might be good enough to make it into professional driving. After that it is a lot of cold calling, door-knocking type networking.

My knowledge is more on the engineering side but I hope this helps.

Skip Barber used to have a program where you wrench on the cars and get some seat time; I'd see if they still do

I think the best way is to check websites of the companies involve in the competitions

and see if they have programs for internships and normally they do have programs for

students. That could be a way to get in and have an understanding of the racing cars and

    competition.

Apply with any Formula renault teams in the UK, BTCC, formula Ford, F3 (albiet more unlikely but always worth a shot). Move to the UK. Study monday to thursday, friday to sunday work at the team.

THAT is the simplest way to move up the ladder quickly in circuit racing. Simplest might be a tad harder since you're based in the states though...
