Seems like Cirrus has really taken the private plane world by storm. They're advertised very well, they have a loyal club, and it seems current owners worship the planes and potential owners lust after them. Almost like a Ferrari. :)

Is this all just hype or is a Cirrus really one of the best single engine props out there?

I've never flown one, or even riden in one, but like you said, every person I've talked to seems to like them, and they say the side-stick is great.

Those planes are very well designed and build and the performance is tough to beat. They (Cirrus) have brought light plane design and engineering out of the stone ages. Retractable performance from a fixed gear bird via smooth composite construction and good aero design. There used to be a large waiting list to get one when it debuted. May still be. Sort of like a F430!

Have to agree. Most, if not all, the popular single engine planes out there were designed a long time ago with very old technology. Most of the engine technology is 50 years old. Cirrus as well as others such as Lancair are truley new designs. Too bad they don't make a 6 seater. I have a family of five.

I personally know two people with an SR22 and they both love them.

They're delivering a lot of planes. The $500k price barrier doesn't seem to make any difference. :)

If you have a serious need for speed, though, check out the Lancair Columbia 400.

Cirrus has adopted the FADEC engine technology for future models. Very nice.

Check out Austin Meyer's adventures at http://www.x-plane.com/adventures.html. He's the guy who wrote the X-Plane simulator program. He must be doing very well if he was able to buy a brand new Cirrus. He had a good article about when he went to pick up the plane in person and flew it home. Lots of good pics of the aircraft as well.

Cool, a thread I can add something to. :)

I had an hour or so of left seat time in an SR-20. It was a real hoot! I'm right handed so I thought the left handed stick would be really wierd but it felt totally natural.

Sorry for the quality of this pic, it's a scan of a picture taken with a disposable camera.

500K...nope try 420k. And mine is LOADED with everything except Air Conditioning. Nearly half of a Beech A36 and faster just no 6 seats. However try 6 adult people and full fuel in A36 and your looking at one pilot that will have a short life.

Austin and I went to engineering school together. I got to see the flight simlulator program he was writting in 1990 for the MAC that later becam X-Plane. I believe that he also as a Ferrari 360 Modena, as well.

just trying to resurrect an old thread, but does anyone know the difference between the current SR22 which is Generation 3 (G3) that came out in '06 versus the last gen Sr22?

I'm in the market for an SR22 but the difference between a preowne and a new one is about $100K.

Given that the new plane I have a sales tax advantage in California over the old plane, but that's still a big premium of new vs pre-owned if the two models are essentially the same.

Hmm, I get too many aviation magazines to remember, I think maybe Plane & Pilot did article on G3 and talked about differences. Actually, find any G3 article and if done well they will contrast. I can't remember minus the turbo version.
