Can't believe this happend to me. I went to install a new Cisco Switch and Cisco ASA device, both of which have an RJ-45 console port. I used the standard Cisco Console cable which is RJ-45 on one end and DB-9 Serial on the other end. I just noticed, my new Laptop does not have a serial port!!!!!!!!!!! Ok ...anyone know if Cisco has another cable which is RJ45 on one end and USB on the other for Console ports? Thanks, UZY
Nope, but you can buy a USB->Serial converter and go from there. The quality of these vary quite a bit, and most require drivers, but you'll get there. http://www.diablocable.com/cisco-compatible-console-cable-usb-kit-p30703.html Alternatively, you can get an el-cheapo used laptop with a serial port and you're set. You might also check to see if there's a docking station for your laptop. My Dell doesn't have a serial port on the laptop, but it does once it's in the station.
Some of the USB -> Serial dongles don't transmit every single command properly so you may have to mess about and try different programs. I have a Belkin and it is flaky. Wish I could remember which one our Cisco guy has.
Chances are Radio Shack is just down the street and they have them in stock... worked every time! http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=3120513# Image Unavailable, Please Login
