Experts, I'm looking at either a 2003 CL500 or going for something like a 1969 280SE. There is only a year left on the CL warranty, then it's out of pocket. My thinking is that a repair or maintenance will be in the same ballpark. Anyone have experience maintaining a classic benz?

Edit: here's the one that I'm looking at...
    280SE - http://miamirbclassics.com/vehiculo_det.php?cod=0000000054

    Also considering a 60's SL....

    Thanks in advance..

It's a no brainer; a 280SE is the best deal and will be substancially cheaper to repair and maintain. Parts are plentiful in the aftermarket and the car can be restored to as new condition. The Cl however is a plastic and electronic nightmare that will keep dropping in value. the 280SE will in either maintain its value or increase. Just my bias two cents as a classic Mercedes Restorer. www.ranchomerced.com

Love the 280, tons of character, but you're going to find it slow. If that doesn't bug you, it looks Sweet !

I was hoping you'd chime in. I remember seeing pictures of your collection.

Take a look at this: http://orangecounty.craigslist.org/ctd/1345789619.html
Without inspecting it yourself, what are your thoughts?

    Planning on buying a 360 within a year, so I'll survive. :)

Too much money for a 230SL; I keep looking for a nice driver 280SL 1970 or 71 are the best bang for the buck in the SL and SE series cars.

Failed to notice it was a 230. My ideal classic benz would be a 280SL in brown/tan.

I appreciate your input. I have a great car now, so I'll be pursuing this idea slowly...
