The muffler on my 360 Spider is heavily discoloured and gives the appearance of rust. I'd like to try and get it back to a shiny stainless thst I know it could be. What is the thinking behind using a very light abrasive such as 0000 steel wool with some metal polish? Or will that scratch it up to much? What have you done?

When I had my 430 I used P21S polishing soap which worked out really well to get the heavy stuff off. I then went with Optimum Metal Polish and applied it with a buffer. It worked really well and made the muffler shine. But I would not hesitate to use the Simichrome polish either. I have used this also and it works great. But if it is heavily oxidized, I would go with the P21S first and then follow with either Simichrome or Optimum.

I just did this yesterday, I started with a scotch/Brillo pad to get the tough stuff out and then followed it up with Mothers mag and aluminum polish I picked up at Walmart. It completely took off the oxidation and brought the shine back

Do not use steel wool on stainless, you can deposit steel into the grain and end up with rust stains.

The heat cycling of a stainless exhaust creates a chromium depleted layer that is prone to corrosion. It is not something you can avoid.

Try a Mr. Clean type of magic eraser sponge and some Bar Keepers Friend as a light abrasive. The BKF has oxalic acid, which is a recognized safe chemical for removing contaminants from stainless.
