Newbie here....Never tackled cleaning red engine covers. I understand you can use degreaser or brake cleaner just want to know the best results out there. Trying to avoid hosing the whole engine. I have a 430.

You can use an all purpose cleaner (APC) and a few brushes to clean the valve covers. Try diluting the APC with some water first and do a 'test spot', a small area of your cover to see if it is giving you the results that you want...it will also make sure that the APC/cleaner is not 'too strong' and will not stain/etch/etc your aluminum covers.

I have used some old soft tooth brushes in the past with good results to get into the small areas that you will need to get into.

After cleaning, I would then spray the covers with some water or a detail spray/waterless wash or the like to rid them of any left over APC/cleaner.

    Hope this helps some!

Let us know how you make out!

I will second the above post. I have had good luck with Simple Green diluted. Let sit for a few minutes and then use a light spray of water to rinse. Dry with a towel. Then after about an hour of residual drying I add a little CD2 engine detailer. Let that sit for a couple of hours, wipe off residual with a soft towel. This should keep them looking good for many weeks to come.

Final step, go get your neighbor to admire all your hard work.

Post pictures of your results, always love to see great engine bays.

Use an APC or Citrus Degreaser and agitate with a brush. Rinse, dry and you're done. If its really stubborn you may want to use a steamer to clean it safely rather than use harsh chemicals that could damage something.

We have cleaned a lot of 430 engines...a LOT of them. We have never had to use anything stronger than standard shampoo, a light brush, and a rinse of water to fully clean them.

If yours is rough and requires something stronger, then use a diluted APC on a cold engine, lightly agitate, and immediately rinse.

You can use something like this if you need to (good to have this around anyways). Sonax Multistar APC | Esoteric Car Care
