I finally had enough of looking at some dirt/grease spots on the interior carpet, so I rented a professional apolstery cleaner from the local Rentals Unlimited. The unit was brand new and I also bought some heavy duty apolstery cleaner from them too. Now to work. The unit held two gallons of water & was a vacuum/sprayer combo. it sprayed the water/chemical & then vacuumed it up. I had visions of sparkling clean rugs.

    :(

it only picked up loose dirt. The sprayer tended to do an adaquate job after several passes and the vacuum was mediocre at best. But since I had mats & rugs & such all over the driveway.....

Drag out the sears Wet/Dry vac. Some Simply Green & a few assorted scrub brushes (dish brush, wheel brush, fingernail brush, tooth brush) and a bucket of water.
Tested the simply green. No color run! Yeah! And it did an GREAT job!

I did use the professional machine to "rinse" the carpets, but the shop vac did better with a crevice tool.

So my opinion is: don't waste you money on a rental if you have a wet/dry in the garage (and what self-respecting home owner doesn't own one of these???)

Oh, and I was a little leary of doing the head liner because of the old glue so I only did where it needed it. You know the spots...where the mechanic's greasy hands grip the roof when they struggle to get out of the car.

Nice tip CLyde...I brought mine to a automated car wash and they have these special purpose machines that you "dip" the carpets (the removable parts anyway) into it ..worked well and then there is carpet "conditioner" that makes the pile soft...

I do not touch my headliner...it is original and very brittle and as you have guessed, cleaning means damage or destruction..got to be oh so gentle withthe fabric.

Isn't "The Dip" what they tried to do Roger Rabbit in with and his luscious wife Jessica?

Hmmmm, I'll have to keep an eye out for that stuff.

I've used Zymol Fabric Cleaner, properly cut with salt-free seltzer, as per instructions, to clean light staining from the headliner and rear shelf fabric. Does the trick without bleaching or any other kind of damage.

My headliner fabric is hanging down slightly and is tickling my head. Should it be glued tight? Can you get a hypodermic or something in there to glue it?

Not with the right type of glue. You need to pull it down from one edge, and use a spray upholstery/headliner/carpet adhesive, such as from 3M.
