THIS is the NUMBER ONE stupid advice given on this forum. The first action people suggest is to turn off the power to clear the codes. How to you propose to troubleshoot any problem without any diagnostics; you intentionally flushed the data needed to diagnose a problem when you cycled the power.

    Rant over

Don't they mean, read and then clear the codes?

Not in most of the threads. The first action they suggest is to turn off the power and see what happens.

My wife suggested a piece of black tape over the CEL would achieve a better result ;)

+1. The ability of modern cars to throw and store codes is a significant improvement, and perhaps the only way to efficiently diagnose complex, ECU-controlled systems. Re-booting by turning off the power should only be used as a last resort.

People are stupid and do stupid things. Nothing is going to change that.

Well, yes and no...our cars in particular tend to throw a lot of erratic and irrelevant codes that tend to make a proper diagnosis more challenging...so clearing the codes ONCE after reading is definitely part of the diagnostic process, as the codes that are relevant to the issue you have will return after you drive the car.

If anyone is seeing a lot of codes their car has a problem. I had my car about 13 years and can count the number of codes on one hand and I know many other owners in the same boat. Can clearing codes be part of a diagnostic process after reading codes; sure but it isn't the first move like so often suggested.

I sure HOPE they mean read and clear!
