There are alternate gases that are compatible with R12 systems after completely evacuating the R12. I am still using R12 so I have not made the switch. There are hydrocarbon systems which I believe are mixtures of propane and butane that actually improve the performance. In terms of safety having less than a Kg of propane in your AC system is far safer than the many cars in Northern Europe that use LPG as their fuel. I am not sure if these will be legal in France, but who will know?! I will send you a link if I find it.

I hope to find the exact link that I referred to. In my search I have found these items:

    www.gov.mu/portal/goc/menv/files/Alternative%20Refrigerants.ppt

    http://www.brighthubengineering.com/hvac/63345-replacement-for-r12-refrigerant/

    http://www.e38.org/pparish/refrig.htm

    This is the stuff! http://www.coolearthinc.com/faq.htm
Duracool 12a It is a hydrocarbon and is flammable but so are many Freon's flammable.

Procedure to put in system is different, follow instructions. Can is held upside down I believe.
