Sorry for the non Ferrari content

This morning about 5:30 am I was getting ready to leave for work when the lights in the house started to flicker, then the dog went nuts. As I went to investigate there was a banging on the front door. A passerby shouted that the house next door was on fire. As my daughter called 911 I ran next door unaware of the downed (and hot) power lines that I was running over in the dark. Just as I got to the door another person called to me that the elderly owner had gotten safely out of the house and had been led across the street.

The one story ranch house (narrow end faces the street) had flames rolling out of the eaves and through the roof for half of it's length at that time. Within just a few minutes the Fire Dept. came and called for more help. Units from 6 communities arrived within 10-15 minutes and knocked the fire down quickly.

Apparently they had used their grill to cook dinner out on their wood deck the night before. Some embers fell from the grill and ignited the wood deck during the night. The fire went up the exterior wall and into the eave and then the attic. It took awhile for the smoke detecter to go off, probably when the fire on the deck shattered the glass door leading to the deck. It looks like the house may be a total loss.

Ok, there is some Ferrari content.
The next time your Ferrari friends come over for a cookout, don't use a grill on your deck. There have been several fires of similar origin locally this summer.

Also, before this thread gets moved, if you're thinking of using pressure-treated lumber to rebuild the louvers on your Boxer/3x8 ... well, bad idea.

(On a more serious note: glad the owner got out safely.)

believe it or not, my sister did the same thing. luckily the fire started the next day and a neighbor saw it before it became too serious. to this day (this was 15 years ago) they still don't have a deck.

I may have seen that on the news - I left the USGP and stayed in northern Kentucky, and watched the news and sportscenter. Are you in Liberty Township? I saw the fire on the news there, paid particular attention because that's where I grew up :) Glad everyone was ok.

Minor note. I grill on a brick patio so this cannot happen to me. I grill away from the house and never on a windy day. My policy is not to put the grill away until the next day so that all embers are out. and everything is cold.

Sounds like there is a lot of common sense in the Naperville area.
