On my 81 308 GTSi...The hoses running to the FI housing are cloth covered. While removing my cam belt cover, I had to remove the 2 hoses to the FI... one of them was so old and brittle it just ripped when i tried pulling it off. I'm wondering if I have to replace it with the same weave/cloth covered hose or can I use like a Gates green stripe? Is the weave/cloth for heat protection?

    No, definately not........

As you mention they are prone to concealed cracking.......go with one lines Cavallino Rampante is selling, from Colorado.....

Verrell has a kit for the plastic injection lines, but you are dealing with vapor control, which still should be fuel rated, IMO.

Gates Green stripe has been found to fail if a gas blend with 'high methanol' content is encountered......

Samples have been found WELL past the "10% Max" label on the pump!!!

Thanks, I have the fuel line kit from Scuderia i didn't think it included that hose, i'll check. Is that a vapor line? It didn't seems to have any fuel in it, though it did have some white gooey material in the line, no idea what that was. What is the purpose of the weave over the hose? Is it to protect it from heat?

White gooey = something bad! LOL!

Really the cloth covering was just 'state of the art' circa 1976......my thoughts would be for abrasion resistance...

I'd be totally surprised if he missed including that one...his middle name is "meticulous".....

Isn't there a numbered diagram in the kit??

I guess worst case, use some Gates on there but keep an eye on it......

Yea, there's a numbered diagram. I don't think this hose is under any pressure, so he
    wouldn't have included it maybe.

It is the reinforcement that gives strength to the hose to resist internal pressure. The typical "smooth" hose that you can use instead still has similar reinforcement -- it is just buried inside the rubber material of the hose.

There are special cases where an external weave (of a special material) is added for abrasion resistance, but the difference here is just where the reinforcement is placed in the hose structure.

There are separate FUEL and VAPOR kits available from Scuderia Rampante Innovations.

Those are crankcase rebreather lines from the 'oil collection system'. Are under no pressure. While davehelms vapor lines are a superior alternative, they aren't exposed to significant amounts of fuel, so gates fuel/oil rated lines should last for many years.

Check your VW dealer/service. That's where I found my cloth vacuum hoses.

For the braided hose you can google for Aeroquip Hose readily available from Murdock Industrial.
